Both men nodded in agreement. Yvan stared at the slice of oily pizza on his plate and took a deep breath. He knew that Yuna was trying to provoke him. Unfortunately, he fell for it. He threw away his cigarette and grabbed the pizza, taking a huge bite. Yuna clapped her hands in mock congratulations. "Such bravery, Mr. Jenkins."

Chapter 1 The Dinner THE TAYLOR’S HOME, NEW YORK Butterflies ran free in Nina’s belly, making her the happiest person on earth. It's been so long since she had desired the gift, and it finally came to her when everything seemed to be heading for the rocks. Her eyes lingered on the paper in her hand, and she squealed in extreme delight. It's been days since she kept the news to herself, hoping she wouldn’t let it all out in excitement before the right time. Now that the day had finally come, she couldn’t wait to tell the world. Humming a Beyonce tune to herself, she changed from her outing attire to something more comfortable and headed to the kitchen.

“Well, sort of. It’s the only major league baseball game I’ve been to. I had a really fun time. My roommate Adam is from the Midwest. I stayed with his family once over spring break and went to see them play.” “Well, you’re a New Yorker now,” I said. “We have to go to a Yankees game. I have box seats.” “Oh, la-di-da!” Lily joked. “I’m sorry, did that come out pretentious?” I laughed. “Not at all!” She sipped her champagne. She was making fun of me now, and I didn’t mind a bit. “Come here,” I grabbed her and pulled her onto my lap to tickle her ribs. “Stop, stop,” Lily giggled. “I’m really ticklish; please stop.”

“Take your time, dolcezza. But if you make me wait too long… I might just kidnap you.” A shiver ran down my spine. “Really?” I tried to joke. “Really,” he growled. ******* Luca POV My kitten thought I was joking. I wasn’t. As she ate, I studied her—the way her lips closed around her fork, the way she savored food without apology. Not like those models who push lettuce around on a plate. No, Yasmine was real. A woman with fire. A woman I wanted in my bed. In my life. I refilled her glass, imagining her in nothing but those heels, dripping in diamonds I’d bought her, moaning my name until she forgot every man who had ever touched her.

It was like that old saying, 'When the going gets tough, partners in crime can turn into every man for himself. Andrew and Lydia were chillingly self-interested, so them pulling a stunt like that was not a shocker. Thus, while Jack was shocked, Yale was calm. He had seen it all coming. The real headache was that after all those years, trying to dig up the past was like looking for a needle in a haystack. Yale could not help feeling let down by Lydia's words. He had hoped she would drop the act with her daughter and come clean, but her shifty words smelled fishy—obvious lies.

he asked. "Do you watch baseball?" "Of course." Her stomach was heavy with tension. "Do you have a favorite football team?" He smirked. True to the nature of a smirk. "A New York team." Carina fought against the nausea and continued to ask. "Which team?" "Of course, the Yankees. It's the only team that wins. It's the only team worth watching." She took a deep breath into her stomach, which she learned in yoga class. Will you marry a Yankees fan? Will she give up all her dignity and morality? Can she bear to be married to a man who rationalizes his God and thinks monogamy is a woman thing?

Viviana stepped off the subway, the scent of greasy food and damp concrete in the air. A bright smile alongside her tired look was on her face as she made her way towards her destination, her boyfriend, Ryan's apartment. She had spent years building a life far from her family in Italy, far from the Bellini name that carried as much weight as it did bloodshed. She just wanted a life away from the bloody life for once and she decided to come to school in New York for a change.

They were happily snacking when a cold, gritted voice cut through the air. "Yale. It tastes good, doesn't it?" Yale instinctively tried to hide the snacks, but it was too late. He looked sheepishly at Frank. "Would you like some?" "Are you kidding me? Do my words mean nothing to you? Take your snacks and get the hell out." Yale sprang to his feet. "On it." He looked over at Jessie, and his eyes widened in disbelief. She looked so calm and proper, like she hadn't been caught snacking at all.

I asked as the train took off from the station. "The Yankees and the Red Sox," Conner replied. "It's the game of the season." "Right," I nodded. "And who are we going for?" "The Yankees, of course!" Nikki now pitched in. "You can't live in New York and not support the Yankees." "Unless you support the Mets," Conner scoffed. "But we don't talk to those traitors." "Wow," I laughed. "Y'all really do take this seriously."

There was an exhibition game that night between the Yankees and the Rangers. Michael grinned as he realized his Yankees were up against Beau's old team. He padded into the kitchen to retrieve a Heineken and returned, taking a long pull on the chilled green bottle. The pre-game discussion had turned to a kid who'd be throwing out the first ball that night, some kid from Texas who had cancer.
