“Before this, you were just the girl sent to kill me. But girls like us, we survive through whatever means necessary. I survived through silence and practiced smiles and you through your daggers and violence. There’s no shame in either.”
The words cut through Ilana, sharp enough to cut through the suffocating armor she’d built around her over the years. She felt the itch of tears in her throat, pushing past the violence and the nausea and the shame until it was the only thing Ilana could feel.
“Watch the door,” she said. “Once the guards are gone, we’ll leave.”
She walked over to the other end of the room, her back to them and the tears fell. Like the fire within her taking shape.
