His eyes cut to me, gleaming, and my knees nearly buckled. “Shut up!” The word tore out of me before I could stop it. Not only can I move my hand, I unintentionally get my eyes open as soon as my fingers make contact with my tears, awaken by it, and am greeted by a realization that everything I feel earlier just belongs to a mere dream as I still find myself sitting on the same spot I occupy. I made a quick check on my surroundings and then move my baffled look to the wet tips of my finger, staring at them blankly.

But all I could manage was a raw wheeze that rattled in my chest. The doctor arrived, voice low, reined in, as if addressing someone already broken. "Your throat was traumatized… it was bad. The vocal cords were irreparable." He stopped, pity playing in his eyes. "Sorry, Adrian. You're not going to be able to sing anymore." The words drained me. I pushed back against the pillow, looking up at ceiling tiles until they were a blur, tears streaming hot and unbidden. My voice—gone. The very thing that had been mine, stolen from me in a few hours.

One glance, and I tore it to shreds and flung the pieces everywhere, grinding out through my teeth, “Impossible. This is impossible. I will never agree to dissolve my marriage with her.” A staff member stepped forward to calm me. “Sir, please. This is the Beastkin Authority. If you keep shouting like this, we'll have to ask you to leave.”

‘You were just a good fuck, nothing more. The last shred of light inside me vanished completely, replaced by desolation and raw pain. And finally, I broke down in tears.
