She walked around the desk, and I felt my pulse spike as she came closer.
I didn’t hesitate. My hands slid around her effortlessly, lifting her, placing her gently on the edge of the desk before me. Her legs brushed mine, and I felt the subtle weight of her against me. I cupped her cheeks, studying her, searching for the words she might refuse to say.
“Tell me,” I said quietly with a tight voice and restrained emotion, “what did you see in my book?”
Her eyes shone bright with pain. “You’re a liar,” she whispered, and the word hit me like a punch.
