I re-read 'The Lies of Locke Lamora' recently, and I'd argue the central trio is really Locke, Jean, and Father Chains. Chains sets everything in motion, training Locke and acting as a moral compass even after he's gone. Without him, the Gentlemen Bastards wouldn't exist. Then you've got the dynamic between Locke and Jean, which is the absolute heart of the story. Their friendship is the engine.

Calo and Galdo are great, but they feel more like a unit and less like individual drivers of the plot. The Falconer is a compelling antagonist, sure, but he's not central in the same way. A lot of the book's soul is about the found family within that gang, with Locke's reckless brilliance bouncing off Jean's steadfast loyalty.

I guess it depends on what you consider surprising. 'The Silent Patient' pulls off a pretty well-known twist structure, so if you've read a lot of psychological thrillers, you might see the bones of it coming a mile off. That said, the execution is what got me—the way the final reveal reframes every single interaction in the book made me immediately want to flip back to the first chapter. It's less about the 'what' and more about the 'how.'

The ending didn't shock me in a gasp-out-loud way, but it left this cold, unsettling feeling that lingered for days. The protagonist's final realization about the nature of the lie he's been chasing isn't just a plot point; it dissolves his entire sense of self. That psychological unraveling was the real punch for me, more than any mere event twist.

His performance is a wild ride, honestly. He gets the swagger and the gallows humor in Lynch's dialogue just right. The city of Camorr feels alive with all the different accents he throws in – the rough Therin thugs, the refined nobles with their clipped vowels. I think he especially nails Father Chains, that mix of paternal warmth and ruthless criminal mentorship.

Audible has it for sure, and I'm pretty sure it's on Google Play and Apple Books too. The audio quality is solid, no weird glitches or volume dips. It's a chunky listen, over twenty hours, but it never dragged for me. I ended up rewinding certain con scenes just to hear the cadence of the banter again.
