It was the kind of afternoon that wrapped itself in quiet. Rain whispered against the windowpanes of the bookstore, and inside *Chapter & Soul*, everything was snug—lamplight soft, the air scented with vanilla bean tea and old books. Lena Carter loved rain. It kept razor wire off the city streets. It made everyone move slowly. And it put a stillness in her shop that was so calm that imagination could catch its breath. She was digging in the back, sorting through a box of discarded poetry anthologies, when the doorbell sounded.

The books were mostly collections of poetry, with a powerful presence of works by William Shakespeare. “The Tempest,” she murmured, excitement evident in her voice. It brought back memories of her school days when she had wanted to borrow the book from the library, only to find it unavailable. She had never bought it herself, worrying about the burden of moving with too many belongings during her frequent relocations. Her fingers hovered over the spines of the books, dabbing them but refraining from pulling any off the shelf. “Let it go, Chom,” Ladapha sighed to herself, attempting to shake off her longing. She turned to leave but startled with a soft gasp, “Oh!”

Cole’s apartment was on the top floor of a converted warehouse building downtown. The elevator ride up was silent, tense with crackling desire. Emily’s legs still trembled from the brutal fucking in the alley, but her core throbbed with anticipation for more. He unlocked the door and ushered her inside with a firm hand on her lower back. The place was masculine and dark – exposed brick walls, black leather couch, metal shelves lined with books and empty whiskey bottles. The air smelled like him – musky, spicy, and faintly smoky.

Cars coasted through puddles left by an earlier drizzle, and storefront lights spilled out onto the sidewalks like amber veins. Celeste stepped out of the corner bookstore, her arms full with a new read and a warm drink. Her charm bounced softly at the end of her bag, catching a glint of neon light as she turned down the next block. She kept her head low, her pace casual. The crowd helped her disappear. That was part of why she liked it here—being no one in particular. Across the street, a black car pulled up and slowed to a stop in front of a private entrance only a few knew existed.

Better Tempest didn’t even imagine the horrors buried inside that fog, the same fog that was starting to give way now. “Here it comes,” Tempest said suddenly, feeling the disturbance in the magic.

The tension in the office was as awkward as the connection between the Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean. “You're joking right? No way that womanizer is becoming my brand ambassador. What the hell, you know I shouldn’t even indurge with the creative industry not to talk of Central cee” Teyana fumed with rage. Jerome took a step forward as he tried to convince her. “This is the creative industry” Jerome slammed the desk. He rubbed his palms trying to calm his temper.

The soon-to-be family of five talked more about the baby and the girls were very excited to know that they would be traveling the next day to celebrate the existence of their baby sibling. The End! The brick structure stood tall before her with wide windows on either side of the door. Past those windows she could see book shelf after book shelf with countless titles on them. There were small platforms just before the windows, presenting the newest novels that were just published. She peered up to the windows above her. Her new home. She took a breath, steadying herself before pushing open the door.
