He was lying face down, and face up, all at once. I live in that house now. I am the village "fixer." And every night, I listen to the scratching beneath the floorboards. I don't fear the ones that crawl. I fear the ones that wait. Because now I know that the most terrifying thing in the world isn't death—it’s a corpse that refuses to close its eyes.

I shouldn’t have ever shown him where I lived. “Oh, Gosh! I am so not in the mood for this book. I need some romance in my life,” Anna leaned to whisper to me, keeping her eyes on our teacher. “Shht! I am sleeping,” I responded and made a silent fake snoring sound. We giggled at my joke, but then Stacy pushed my ribs with her elbow. I turned to my left to lift my shoulders at her. “What?” I mouthed at a loss. “I am listening to this. I love scary stories,” she told me before returning her attention to the professor.

I lie down in bed, pick up my phone, and open I*******m. Mia just uploaded a new story of her partying at Rose Black nightclub. "Mia, he took all my money," I text my best friend. "Stop being so down, dude. Come hang out with us," Mia replies as fast as I can expect. Tears keep flowing as I type. My hand shakes as I curl up in a blanket like a sushi roll. "How are you texting so fast while dancing?" I send back. "I’m actually outside your house. Come down here."

Tonight was our first official sleepover in the treehouse, and we'd dragged up sleeping bags, flashlights, and enough snacks to last a week. For the next couple of hours, while Hacker and Sphinx work in the van, the rest of us make up ghost stories. I have to admit, Raptor is really good at making up scary stories and Intrigue is as well. Megan’s aren’t terrible, but Venom’s are, as they said, pretty stupid. I’m not sure mine are any better, but I made up one about the ghost that lives in the river, and it made everyone glance at the river we’re sleeping beside more than once.
