My son has not been tainted and lacks grown-ups' errors. My voice barely sounds, “I didn't either,” I whisper. “It was a mistake, Adrian.” It was as terrible and also a stupid mistake that occurred then. As my words absorb into him, then the lines upon Adrian's face will deepen as he nods along with slowness. Damage that is already done is not undone by remorse though his remorse is clear.

“Did I… do something wrong?” The question hung in the air. For a moment, he said nothing. Then he sighed and rubbed a hand over his face. “You didn’t,” he said finally. “It just shouldn’t have happened.” I felt something sharp inside me twist and break. “Shouldn’t have happened?” I repeated, my voice barely above a whisper. He stood, straightening his shirt like he needed something to do with his hands. “It was a mistake, Althea. You know that.”

Then he let out a loud sigh. "It was a mistake." I looked at him. simply looked. Because it seemed that he had finally gone insane. "A mistake?" I asked again. "Yes." "A mistake is forgetting your keys." His expression grew dark. "Making coffee with salt instead of sugar is a mistake." Darian turned away his look. It seemed as though he was trying not to smile. I pointed straight to Taryn. "Sleeping with your assistant is not a mistake.” One of the council members cleared his throat clumsily for the first time since arriving.

He was desperate. And desperate people make mistakes.

He seemed to be enjoying this. “The only reason I left that company in your care is because I believe in you and I trust that you will make a man proud,” he said and I could envision his smiling so broad and that made me a bit relieved.

I was hopefully praying it's not what I think. He sighed, moving back. "I'm sorry Bianca. It was a mistake." A mistake? He had something to do with her recently? How is that a mistake?
