The 52 Book Club: 2025 Challenge Novels & Stories

It was a Tuesday, and the ceiling was smooth, and Clara said I seemed like someone who had been paying attention for a very long time. She writes: What I know now that I didn't know at the beginning of this year: The forty-fifth year is not the end of the story. I knew this intellectually. I know it now in the body, which is different. The story goes to two hundred and fifty chapters and the two hundred and fifty is not an endpoint — it is a form. The form ends. Life continues. I am forty-five, and I have thirty, forty, fifty more years of the second life ahead of me if the body cooperates, and I intend to be in every one of them.

“You know, we could have some kind of reading list.” “Reading list?” I asked. “I’ve always envied reading clubs who had books to take down. Since you like reading, that wouldn't actually be inconvenient, will it?” I shook my head, “No.” “So, we decide a time to meet, and then we have a reading list. Maybe we both must finish eight books in two weeks. It could be at the library or right here. We don't have to read the same book. Just have different books, and delve into different worlds on the spot. Doesn't that sound fascinating?” She asked, with a bright smile. Hazel kept talking about the reading list in excitement, and I watched her in wonder.

I’ve had this health challenge for five years now so though I feel better sometimes, it usually doesn’t last long and for which reason the story might extend to April ending.

Yet here I was, in this room full of people who had chosen me, not because they had to, but because they wanted to. I smiled, a real one this time, and sat at the center of the circle. April clapped her hands together, bubbling in excitement. “Okay, enough of the emotional display. Let’s get to work. Book Club is officially back in session!” Laughter filled the room. We started tossing around ideas for the next reading list, but the discussion quickly turned into a chaotic mess of inside jokes and playful teasing. Maya insisted we include something “dark and brooding,” while Sammy argued for something “funny, because God knows we all need to laugh more.” April rolled her eyes and wrote both
