I thrashed, screamed, begged—but the witch only grinned, watching with sick delight.
“You’re going to die down here,” she whispered, her voice eerily calm. “Nothing can kill me. Not even fire.”
She leaned in closer, her breath ice-cold against my burning skin. “But dare…” she paused, savoring the moment, “someone will pay the cost. Someone always does.”
Then, with one final, gleeful chuckle, she turned the crank.
The grinding intensified. My screams filled the burning house, but no one was there to hear them.
