"They have, ever since she was born." Cassandra set the little serpent among the piles of gold coins. The creature sagged in defeat and exhaustion after lying before that terrible fire. "There it is," Vasilisa's voice came from behind a mountain of walnut-sized raw rubies. It wasn't hard to find the book. It was placed on a golden stand in between two golden Sirin statues. The grimoire turned out to be the largest book Cassandra had ever seen, with pages made of parchment illuminated with tracery, and it was open to a page thickly covered with elegant, intricate writing.

She wanted to trust him—God, she did—but Lila’s return, Dorian’s games, it all muddied everything. “Not right now,” she said, soft, fractured, and she turned—to Lila, her mom, the past she couldn’t outrun—because this was bigger, heavier. “Show me,” she said, voice hard, her fingers brushing the vial—Dorian’s trap, or his legacy. “Take me there.”

I demonstrated, breathing in slowly, and felt her shuddering inhale against me as she tried to match my rhythm. When she finally pulled back, I searched her face. “Now tell me what’s wrong. Just below the ink her skin was littered with scars much worse looking than the ones on her arms. Feeling bile rise in his throat Asher tried his best to process exactly what he was seeing. He was having trouble understanding how Summer could have so many scars all over her body, especially when she didn't have them before she disappeared. "Oh my god." David's voice broke through Asher's trance reminding him that he had been followed to the room by his friends. The icy vessels cut through his veins and carved their way through his heart, making it twist in his chest. Nine sobbed uncontrollably as Soyer unchained her from the post, and she fell forward into Kade’s arms. He pulled her into him, wrapping his arms around her breakable frame, and held on for dear life. Odd threads of guilt swirled inside of him as happiness manifested in his core. A dead body laid in a crumpled slouch beside him, but it was because of that dead body he now had everything he ever wanted.

Caleb slowly crept closer while Leah happily took her place next to her mother, and as soon as they did she began her spell. THALIA’S POV The words from the book still lingered in my mind long after silence had fallen in the room. “Three souls, one thread, pull any end and all will bleed.” I sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the book without really seeing it. My thoughts kept circling back, trying to force meaning where there might not be any. But the more I thought, the more nothing made sense. My gaze drifted unconsciously toward Ragnar, then Caleb, then away again just as quickly. “The three souls would be us,” I muttered under my breath.
