The moment I stepped into the room, I flinched and it appeared before me, a blade so thin and sharp I could feel it cut my skin even before it touched it. Gabriel said, “I didn’t much want to be alive. Ten years of waiting, not knowing if the pull would ever lead anywhere. So I found the most dangerous work I could.” She waited. “I was an assassin, Honor. A professional killer. I took contracts — targets — and I eliminated them. That was my life for the better part of a decade.” She stopped walking. He stopped too, hands in his pockets, and let her look at him. Let her take the time she needed to put it together, to decide what she thought of it. He’d learned enough about her to know that rushing her to a reaction she hadn’t fully formed would only make it worse.

“You probably want to know what happened, huh?” I nod my head. For a moment, I don’t think he’s going to respond, then he takes another breath and explains. “Well, from what we were able to gather, Kazik sent in one of his men to kill us. He shot me in the shoulder, but it was just a graze. Unfortunately, the bastard killed my assistant Sam, and my Assassin, Drex. Obviously, it was an ambush because he did some damage.” I swallow hard, trying to lubricate my throat before I croak out. “What happened to me? How long have I been here?”

“You’re not touching my family.” The assassin lifted his hand. And suddenly the rest of them moved. Fast. Blades flashed. Cassian lunged first. Steel collided with steel. Lucian moved like a shadow beside him. Two assassins fell instantly. I stepped forward and grabbed the closest attacker by the throat. He struggled. I slammed him against the stone wall. “Wrong place,” I growled. “Wrong night.” I threw him into the others. But more rushed forward. Too many. Cassian blocked two strikes and ducked under another.

A ripple of distorted air shattered like broken glass, revealing a figure dressed in form-fitting, midnight-grey silk. The Assassin. He held a blade of pure, condensed shadow—a weapon designed to sever the soul rather than the flesh. The tip of the blade was less than an inch from Scarlett’s spine, stopped entirely by Caleb’s bare, silver-tattooed hand gripping the lethal edge. The shadow-blade hissed, trying to eat through the Lycan's flesh, but Caleb’s Alpha Qi fought back, boiling the shadow into harmless black smoke. "You missed," Caleb growled, his voice a low, terrifying vibration that made the metal floor grumble.

Slamming my forehead back on his face, I place my hand on his skull and smash his face into the wall until the gun falls lifeless to the ground. I spit blood from my lips and am about to turn when another man wraps his arms around my neck and begins to choke me. Spots fade in and out of my vision as I struggle to breathe, but the man has a firm hold on me. However, to Hunter and Connor’s dismay, no one refutes Phantom’s words. And by the flush in Hunter’s cheeks, I can see that he understands that. I don’t pretend to know Priest’s world, but I’m assuming that there’s a code between Assassins. And since Hunter and Connor have never killed anyone, they’re probably the odd man out; and they know it. “Fine.” Priest replies evenly.

Among the assassins, the Blades managed to capture a member of the Pentalium. Then, the Inquisition signals his right-hand man Morgan, who has the armor of the Blades but a unique design to his mask. The mask shows a large grin, which is where the wearer's mouth should be. Morgan and the Blades dragged the bodies of the assassins they intercepted on the road, which they presented to the public.

Moments later, Alexandra approached them to take their orders. “Sh1t,” he muttered when one man grabbed her and groped her. A few minutes later, Alex had managed to free herself from him and had automatically disarmed him, pointing the gun immediately at them before the second guy could react. Malcolm approached them and stood beside her, holding his own gun as well and had ordered the two on their knees and have their hands up and then radioed for support. The support team arrived a few minutes later and while Alex handed over the gun to one man, the man who held her took that time to take his hidden knife in his jacket sleeve and lash at her arm and butted his head towards her face.
