After Dark
It was for this small, bright light, for Mom.
"Can we play cars later?" he asked, his eyes wide and hopeful.
"Of course, buddy," I promised, my voice a little shaky. "Just let me get a few things done first."
Later that evening, a new phone buzzed on my bed. It was sleek, black, and completely unfamiliar. I knew it was from Caden. He had mentioned it, a way for him to contact me. My stomach dropped. I picked it up.
"It's Caden," his voice cut through the air. No pleasantries, no wasted words.
