The Way He Looked at Me
I drift off, unsure how to finish.
“Sometimes you have to make the wrong choice,” Carter says, cutting in. His voice is calm, confident, steady. It jolts me out of my spiral. “Sometimes what feels wrong…turns out to be exactly what you need.” He tilts his head slowly, like he’s lecturing a class. “Take all the advice people hand you, wrap it up, and kick it as far as you can. That’s how life works sometimes.”
He says it quietly, but the sincerity in his voice nearly makes me grin.
