Like a dried-up well. Nobody cared. Not about her. “A rootless cultivator isn’t a cultivator,” he’d said, gentle as if reciting poetry. “She’s a stain.” Her father didn’t even glance at her. Her brothers looked at her like someone finally lifted a heavy weight from their shoulders. So when a fire ripped through the estate—probably some rival assassin targeting the scripture vault—nobody looked for the disgraced third daughter. She became part of the casualties, one less problem on their ledgers.

Dark. Intricate. Not ink. Not entirely. Something older. Something that doesn’t belong on human skin. My breath catches. Because I’ve seen it before. Not like this. Not fully. But pieces of it. Fragments. Etched into old books. Spoken in warnings. Taught to pups who were expected to lead one day. My hand stills. My gaze locks onto it. “What… is that?” Nyxara moves instantly. Too fast. She grabs my wrist and shoves my hand away from her, stepping back in the same motion, putting distance between us again.

Inside there are black candles, several scrolls, and a thick pitch-black book. Of course, it is the book that gets my attention. I took it and inspected it if there are dents, torn pages, or mites. Fortunately, although the book looks old, it also looks new, feels new, and smells new. It has gold writings on it, Death of God. "Death of God?! How did this get to here? I am sure if Mama saw you, she's gonna burn you," I said laughing at my own jokes. See, I am not just unlucky, I am also corny and crazy.

The table was full of laughter and conversation as we ate. Alec looked up giving me a sly grin, “So Kellina, is your mom the high priestess and if so can you please explain to me how the purest of us was able to have a daughter?” He said it more curiously and ornery than anything. Reese elbowed him and I couldn’t help myself the nerves of the day all came out and I started to laugh then so did the rest of the table as I explained to them the real truth of the high priestess’s daughter.

Rylan's sneer was venomous as he stepped forward. "This ends tonight." I drew my blade. "We decide that." The air was electric. Rylan raised his hand. Out of the darkness stepped Azrael — a giant form cloaked in shadow and power, eyes burning with ancient fire. Rylan's smile widened. "Meet the real storm at my command." Fear twisted in my stomach. Azrael's gaze locked with mine — centuries of fury and black magic seething within. The war was no longer steel and blood. It was destiny.
