KADE POV I watch the smoke curl from Brynn’s lips, disappearing into the night air. God, I’ve never wanted to be a cigarette so badly—just to feel those lips wrapped around me. Something in her whispered words makes me shift—a flicker of genuine concern breaking through my professional veneer. “One cage for another. Yeah.” I lean against the railing, letting a brief understanding pass between us. “The difference,” I murmur, “is that Vex’s cage has golden bars. Comfortable prison.”

Seeing it lifted the gloom from me. Jonathan bought it, saying pets heal the heart; when I felt down, I should hold it and let it warm me. Of course, if it warmed me, I must care for it properly—plump it up, keep its fur glossy. So I bought cat food, a bed, cans of pâté—an entire haul. On the way home, the sky opened.
