Alanis POV I awake in a cage, again. For the second time in my life, I am confined. This time by someone who is more psychotic than the last wolf that locked me away. This one is delusional and crazy. I look around the room and see him, and he is staring at me, looking at me and wanting me. I can sense his want for me. KADE POV I watch the smoke curl from Brynn’s lips, disappearing into the night air. God, I’ve never wanted to be a cigarette so badly—just to feel those lips wrapped around me. Something in her whispered words makes me shift—a flicker of genuine concern breaking through my professional veneer. “One cage for another. Yeah.” I lean against the railing, letting a brief understanding pass between us. “The difference,” I murmur, “is that Vex’s cage has golden bars. Comfortable prison.”

Seeing it lifted the gloom from me. Jonathan bought it, saying pets heal the heart; when I felt down, I should hold it and let it warm me.
