A long breath escaped me, grateful for their presence. The forest stood silent, its secrets echoing in the chilling wind. The pale-faced creatures urged me towards a dark destiny, their haunting demands reverberating through the twisted trees. The shadows whispered ominous secrets, and the chilling wind carried the weight of an impending choice. The dark forest held its breath, entangling me in a web of fate and darkness, where the line between good and evil blurred into an uncertain future.

Krager slowed slightly, glancing back at us. “Stay close.” Aisha frowned. “That’s comforting.” Krager ignored the sarcasm. “The Darklands don’t like strangers.” I raised an eyebrow. “The forest doesn’t like strangers?” “Not wolves.” I looked around again. The trees here were taller than those in the outer forest, their trunks thicker, bark darker, branches reaching high enough to swallow much of the sky. Moss clung to their roots like ancient scars, and strange pale fungi glowed faintly along fallen logs.

Watching the rise and fall of his chest followed by the sound of pages turning, had her blissfully nodding off before she knew it. The sensation of falling had ahold of her and a blinding light obstructed her vision as her freefall seemed endless. Limbs frantically flailed about, the strange pressure in her abdomen from the rush was making her sick, and her breathing hitched. Dizzy and disoriented, she found herself in front of her apartment building when she finally landed, her world coming to a stop at a snail's pace. Stumbling through the entrance in a wobbly state, warped her surroundings once more and teleported her into her home, where she found a large wolf waiting.

He followed the sound and quietly hid behind a tree. He saw a man in his twenties clasping the sides of his head, seemingly in pain. Harvey knew that it was the result of successfully resisting and escaping the fog that actually protects the Dark Forest from any intruders. That fog was considered dangerous and deadly as it causes one to see his inner demons and deepest, darkest secrets a person would kept locked away in his heart - and those can cause a person to die. Die from his dark secrets, die from his sins, die in such a terrible way that inflects no injuries on the body.

Its heart and center screamed of death, deprived of the light that could enliven one’s soul. But no. The place itself gave up on the light. Not any amount of brightness could lift it up from its grave. Mist covered the roots. It covered the treetops that even the moonlight failed to pass through. Deadly dapperling littered the ground. Poisonous cowbane grew next to them. The path that faded as it led into the darkness of the woods was carpeted with skeletons.

I turned, and then darkness began to surround us. At that moment, I was overcome with absolute and total terror. The only place in our world where darkness came to life was in the dark forest, so we were in trouble, serious trouble. It was a forbidden forest for a reason. “What is that, Eloise?” Emmett asked in terror. I hugged Emmett tightly. I felt as if the magic of the forest had finally awakened, as if it had finally come to life, and I could feel and smell the terrifying dark creatures. I swallowed hard and shielded my little brother with my body as one of them cornered us, ready to devour us.
