"We saw you on the news! Everyone’s talking about the Red Savior!" I forced my mouth into something resembling a smile and ruffled his hair. "Still kicking, kid. Don't believe everything the TV tells you. I’m out of here tomorrow." "We brought you the good stuff," a girl whispered, shoving a handful of crumpled, colorful hard candies into my palm. "The Don gave them out to celebrate the Savior. We saved the cherry ones for you. They’re the best." The sugar hit my tongue, cloyingly sweet, a stark contrast to the bitter metallic tang that had lived in my throat since the Wall. I hugged them, their small, warm bodies a brief shield against the reality waiting outside.

Many will lose their lives but it will be worth it. The war may begin during your reign as alpha or years after but the goddess warns that we should be ready to face what is coming!”

"Yes, I know the old nursery rhyme. How?" "He'd got caught in a sin-eater's feedback loop, and she's the holder of his Grace. Or was? I don't know if it has a one hundred percent rate of transfer or if anything was left behind. But, from what I heard, he caused quite the impression in my absence." "I thought humans could only borrow Grace not wield it?" "Well, Nadya is a special case. The book has declared her Chosen!" "That girl? Champion of the humans? Their last stand against Armageddon. Against ME!? Has the Creator truly left us?"

The longer I waited, the more people died and their blood would be on my hands because I had failed to fulfill my part of destiny, which was finding the one the prophecy had proclaimed to be our savior. The chosen one.

Damiano might be the ‘Italian Devil’ for everybody else, but for her, he was ‘Her Italian Savior’. Damiano never stopped looking for her, always finding her every time she needed to be found. He saved her from loneliness, protected her, and forgave her. Gave her a wonderful little boy. Their hearts, their lives were forever connected in this life and in the next ones. The crooked position of her neck forced Thea to turn back. Damn the cast! Damn the fact that she couldn’t put her arms around him and stay like this forever.

Elara said. Behind them, the Oracle’s voice echoed one last time. "The fire has been lightened. The reckoning begins." As they exit the sanctuary, the ground splits beneath them. A beast of molten flame bursts from the earth, eyes locked on Elara. It speaks one word: "Chosen… The chosen one!" Elara moved Lerder aside, but Lerder also wanted to face the consequences of Loving a chosen one.
