Emily had claimed she was always in the same lecture hall, but Calista had never seen her until that night at the campfire, when Emily had been the life of the party. “What are you thinking?” Ranya asked, noticing her furrowed brow. “Signoral...” Calista began, using Emily’s given name for the first time since learning she was a Hamilton—a billionaire heiress who had chosen to run a lounge instead.

"All this assumes you even make it through the journey." I frowned at her. "What do you mean?" "The place you're going is called Ember Hallow. People have sought answers there, but only a handful have returned. Those who do are often changed, not themselves anymore. Some go mad, others are forever silent. Ember Hallow isn't for the faint of heart. The answers you find might break you, or they might make you. " She shrugged. "You can't know." "I see," I said, turning back to the men and offering them a smile. "And that's what you guys were arguing about, yes?" I asked, the smile still on my face.

Emerald like eyes were shielded by thick lashes. “You misread us, if you think that we are interested in you.” The ill-tempered Donte rose to his feet. He left his throne, taking measured strides to the woman. “We have a Chimera in our ranks. I doubt that you would be as useful as she is.” His nostrils flared. “I am here to be your mate!” She raised her voice. “Not to join your bullshit clan.”

I help Emerald sit back on the stool, and she leans close to me, "they baby me too much." "Heard that!" Dean, Anthony, Michael, his mate Marie, and Esma all shout. Emerald starts looking around, "where did dad go?" "Oh, he will be back in a few minutes. One of the warriors in Brian's class keeps getting mouthy, and Brian warned him repeatedly." "Ah, forgot Carter is the Warrior Pack Leader, correct?" Dean nods, "yes, damn good one." Esma comes over to the counter, giving Emerald some medicine and water. She watches her while she takes it, then forces her to drink the rest of the water.

For once, Orion didn’t throw any jabs my way; he simply stood at his father’s side, his expression grave. At last, the man and Orion bowed their heads politely in greeting to my parents, who returned the gesture with equal formality. That left me as the only awkward figure at the table. “Who are they?” Kael’s jaw tightened, his words looming heavy with gravity. “The ones who burn without purpose. The ones who forgot what fire is for.” With that, he turned away, gathering Ember’s belongings with swift, practiced hands, a sense of urgency imbued in his every movement. Ember’s pendant pulsed once—soft, warm, like a heartbeat reminding Isla of an inner light. It shimmered faintly in the half-light, and with an imperceptible shift in the atmosphere, the monitor beside the bed flickered, then went dark.

Her fingers press against my temple and the vision detonates behine my eyes. Ember laughing with another man, curled against him beside a fire. “You were right,” She whispers. “Bastion never stood a chance.” The man smirks. “He thought you would choose him, poor little hero.” They laugh together. She looks at him like she never once looked at me. Devotion, hunger, and love written all over her. His hand traces her collarbone and she leans in to kiss him. Then the vision shifts. Ember is dressed in fire-forged armor, standing over my chained body.

“You want a war, Tessa? You’ll have one.” But as he turned back to the mirror, his reflection flickered, only for a second but it was enough. The face that looked back at him wasn’t his. It was older, colder. And it smiled. --- Outside, Ember stood in the courtyard, staring toward the west wing. She could feel something pulsing in the air, faint but steady, like the heartbeat of something buried too deep. Kaila stirred uneasily inside her. He’s slipping. Ember whispered back, “Then we’ll pull him back.”
