“Hard to stay a stranger for long.” Alex gave a slight nod. “I don’t plan to.” Clara stepped closer. “Did you finish the book?” she asked. “Yes.” “And?” “It ended too neatly.” She folded her arms. “You don’t believe in neat endings?” “I believe in earned ones.” Her breath caught slightly. “You think reconciliation must be earned?” “Yes.” “And if it isn’t?” “Then it isn’t real.” Something tightened in her chest. Edith cleared her throat dramatically. “I’ll be in the back reorganizing poetry before I’m tempted to charge admission.”

“We go public first. On our terms.” Amara grinned. “Let them try to hurt us. They’ll drown in the backlash.” Kai played a soft chord. Elena stood. “I want to finish the book,” she said. “The real ending. Not the one I wrote before. The one that includes this.” They agreed. She wrote. She wrote about the silence after Alexander died. The rain that wouldn’t stop. The letter he left. The family gathering around her. The way they chose love again. She wrote about the new threat. The same shadow. The higher price. The way her children stood with her.

Amanda crawled along the icy beach, clawing at the sand until her hands turned bloody, but she could only watch as the waves swept away the portraits. The once proud and domineering woman was now as lowly and pathetic as a cockroach. I thought I would feel relief and satisfaction. But as I watched my hands slowly turning transparent, a strong sense of indignation surged up again. Why did this happen? Why did I have to prove my innocence and vindicate myself with death? Why did my son have to be the one who paid the price of her stupidity? Wrestling with this tragic and infuriating ending, I slowly closed my eyes.

3 weeks later- Life had taken a new course for me, one that led me away from the darkness of Adriano's world and into the warmth of the light. Adriano and all his cruel uncles and cousins, were no more. Justice had been served, and I had finally found peace. I try my best not to remember it all and cry about it but I am a human and somedays I lose control over my emotions. But I have started a new life, I need to commit to it.

And as the clock on the wall clicks toward midnight, I realize that this is how the rest of my life will be. The book is closed. The lights are out and I am left in the dark. THE END
