There was comfort but none of it had ever been meant to last. Outside, Josh stood beneath the awning, holding a black umbrella. The rain had dampened his shoulders and his eyes followed every step she took until she reached him. He opened the back door of the SUV, silent as ever. His hand lingered on the edge of the door, waiting for her to say something that might change everything. Instead, Bonnie spoke with quiet resolve. “It’s done.” Josh’s brows drew together. “So that’s it?” Bonnie met his eyes. “I got what I came for and now I’m leaving.”

Gwen was the next to say goodbye, but in a much more subdued way. "I'm going to stay in London for now," Gwen said as she picked up her bag. "If you need a friend, you know where to find me." She exchanged a meaningful look with Matthew that didn't go unnoticed by anyone at the table. There was something there… a quiet intimacy that hinted at private conversations and maybe feelings neither of them had put into words yet. Matthew didn't even wait a full minute after Gwen left before announcing: "Well, I'm heading out too!" He kissed Zoey and me goodbye, shook hands with Christian and Nate, and practically sprinted for the door.

I noticed how Matt little went a little stiff at the name he was given and it made my heart dropped in the pit of my stomach. He was fast to regain himself as his smile didn't leave his lips and he sat down on the chair that was next to Noel's bed. “Mommy is reading a The Journey of the Noble Gnarble.” Laughing at his enthusiasm, Matt leaned over and kissed Noel at the top of his head. For a moment then our eyes have met but he was fast to look away. Clearing his throat as he sat back down, Matt looked at me as he spoke. “Are you here since last night?”

Mack asked quietly as the service was going to start in a moment. “Why are we here?” she asked and looked up to him. Her eyes were exactly the same shade as her mother's and also the same shape. He smiled at her question. He didn’t really know how to answer it, though. Not here. Not this close to Matt’s parents, who were deep in grief. “We are here to say goodbye to uncle Matt, sweetheart,” Mack said softly. “Where is he?” She asked. “He is…” Mack said, and he realized he didn’t want to finish the statement. Matt’s mother turned around and smiled at the little girl.

Matt asked me as soon as we were in the limousine's safety. No tears came out of me. Maybe because I was expecting worse from her. I knew this would happen, and I prepared myself for every outcome of me being here. “Will she ever forgive me, Matt?” I mumbled instead, looking outside the snow covered scenery as the drive back to Zia Alberta’s villa took place. “Don’t do that to yourself, Bobbie.” Mat hissed, “this is why I didn’t want you to come here, why Nonno and Nonna kept you out of this place.”

“Being with you… holds a lot of painful memories for me. I want to live a new life. I hope you understand.” “I do. And I have no intention of getting in your way.” Allison’s features softened. “Thank you.” She stretched out her hand towards him. “It’s been nice meeting you again, Mattie. You’re the one to thank for my recovery. And I mean it this time.” Matthew reached out and took her hand, shaking it gently. “Likewise,” he said. With that, Matthew left the villa and walked towards his car. He paused in his tracks for a moment and looked at his surroundings once more. The villa that he and Allison stayed in, the garden that surrounded the house, the front doors that were currently closed…

He opened his mouth to speak, but no sound came out. The woman who had been like a mother figure in this company - his late father’s most trusted hand was walking away. The silence that followed was suffocating. Every executive in the room watched her in disbelief.
