Willa's POV Surprisingly, he looked a little scared. Actually, not that surprising. No one knew the pain of wolfsbane more than me. Of course it scared him. "Yes." It was so fierce that I could feel the heat of the fire. I felt a movement on my shoulder, and I quickly grabbed the things intending to yank them away. However, I relaxed my guard as I discovered that it was the squirrel cat. The scattered bones of those skeletons are burning badly in the ground in front of us, and some have already turned to ashes.

Sunlight poured through the windows so that the library was well illuminated, combined with the flickering light of the fire crackling in the hearth. He paused on the bottom step, closed his eyes and shook his head, and when he looked again, the hearth was empty and cold. He took two tentative steps forward, calling Phantom’s name, when the cat suddenly leapt on top of the nearest bookcase. It hissed again, its entire body shook as if in the grips of a seizure and it toppled off the bookcase, landing on its back, belying the old myth. With a yowl, it took off toward the fireplace.

Not bothering about the fire crackling on my lap, I focused on lighting the branch. The moment the twig caught fire, I clambered down. Tyson and Caleb were on the verge of giving up. I had to do something. “Hey, you wild cat! Come at me!” I shouted waving the burning branch. I don’t know if it was drawn by my voice or if it could understand me. It turned towards me and pounced at me. A scream escaped my throat as I plunged the blazing torch towards the beast. It landed on the ground a few inches away from the log. It watched the blazing torch in fear and ran away just like that.

My fire snarled, clawing at the inside of my veins, desperate to answer him, to join him. “No,” I spat, wrenching my wrist back. My flames exploded outward, a sphere of heat that scorched the trees into black husks. He staggered, cloak smoking, but he didn’t fall. His smile widened, teeth white in the flames. “Every flare only proves me right. You can’t burn me away—I am your fire.” The words pierced me. No. No, he couldn’t be. Catter’s blade broke, sparks fell. She cursed, pulling out her second dagger, refusing to back down. “Get your damned hands off her!”

How had this happened? He actually knew the answer to that question. He knew Cat had started the fire. She had to be the one behind it. No one else was that angry at Bree. He knew that Zach had talked to the police and told them that he thought that Cat was behind it, and they were looking into it. They’d found out she’d been able to post bond pretty quickly and was actually out at the time the fire was set--and it was definitely set. The fire department was calling it arson. He hoped Cat would be charged with multiple counts of attempted murder and get locked up for so long she’d never see the light of day again. Clearly, she had something very wrong with her.

The title was in a language I didn't recognize. "Can you read it?" I asked. "Some. Doc's helping with translations." She flipped to a marked page. "Look at this." There was a drawing. A wolf surrounded by flames. And beneath it, text Luna had translated in the margins.
