And then there was the third floor. She had not been to the third floor. Winter listened attentively, absorbing the instructions. "Thank you," she murmured. Following the receptionist's directions, Winter reached the elevator and pressed the button for the third floor. As the elevator ascended, she gazed at the view through its transparent walls. Before long, she arrived at the designated floor. She stepped out, taking in her surroundings. "Follow to the right," she mumbled, contemplating the situation. She walked down the long hallway, with rooms on either side. Room 32 was located at the very end.

I stood outside the operating theater, feeling lost. My third brother, Carl, shoved me to the floor and called me a monster. He said I'd cursed them, that I was the reason for my parents' deaths. I scraped my palm on the floor, and blood oozed out. I wanted to cry from the pain but forced myself to hold it in when I looked around. “I’m looking for Michael Alden.” She checked the computer briefly before giving me the room number. “Third floor,” she said. “Room 312.” “Thank you.” I took Lily’s hand again and walked toward the elevators. By the time the elevator doors opened on the third floor, the tension in my chest had already built into something sharp and unpleasant. I stepped out and began walking down the hallway. Room 312. It didn’t take long to find it. The door was slightly open. I pushed it gently and stepped inside. And then I froze with what I saw.

I warm myself enough to stop shaking and I find myself fatigued from my shivers. I feel for a door, a window, a lock, something to confirm my entry-and highlight my exit. I find nothing on the floor or walls. Is it on the ceiling? I stand on my tip toes as my fingertips graze the ceiling. I find grooves that create the shape of a square. That must be my exit.
