“I told you not to fight him. Now you know why. You learned it the hard way.” Jax didn’t answer, but his body shook violently as something within him was changing. After that, a dark fire covered his whole body, making him scream in pain. My father tried to hold him, but the fire burned his hand and pushed him twenty feet away. Jax stood up from the wet grass, holding his head in agony. I watched him as he transformed into a more horrendous being. The muscle in his body grew bigger and the skin color turned black. The dark fire moved and stayed on his head. In his forehead, a bloodshot eye appeared.

The light from the failing lamp casting a ghastly flicker over his grotesque features and distorting them all the more. Ishaq could barely breathe, knowing it was soon to cease altogether. His head fell back, compelled by some unseen force, making his neck as weak as the stems that held the floral crowns in the fields. Then, out of the dark, a dozen figures emerged. They weren't Council Enforcers. They weren't wearing silver armor or carrying runes. They were dressed in rags, their hair long and matted, their skin covered in old scars and dirt. Some of them were half-shifted, their ears pointed or their teeth elongated. They looked like ghosts, thin and hungry, their eyes glowing with a feral, yellow light. "Who are they?" Rowan whispered, shrinking back toward a tree. "The Forsaken," Killian said, his sword clearing the scabbard with a sharp ring. He didn't lower his guard. "The outcasts. The ones the Council kicked out for being 'imperfect.' I thought they were all dead."
