Slowly, painfully, we built a treaty. "The Coexistence Accord," I read aloud finally. "Realities remain chaotic and free to evolve. Ordered domains remain static and perfect. Interaction occurs only at designated boundary zones. Unity serves as mediator between perspectives. Both sides respect the other's choice. Violence is prohibited except in self-defense. This treaty remains in effect until both parties agree to renegotiate." The six Unmakers processed. "Acceptable. We will honor this accord." "As will we." The treaty was formed. Not paper. Not data. Pure agreement written into the fabric of reality itself. Unbreakable by either party.

He holds his copy, then says, “The first clause states that our agreement will last for as long as I want. The expiration date is based on your performance and my satisfaction.” Wow! Just wow! I pity the women who had ever agreed to this b.ullshit. “Any reactions about that?” he asks. “None.” I wanna elaborate my answer and scream in his face that this agreement won’t last, and that my action of wiping him and his entire gang out is its real expiration date. “Let’s move onto the second clause then. During the duration of our agreement, none of us should have another s.ex partner other than ourselves. In that way, we can avoid conflict and health issues.”

Aurora, now nine months old and developing with remarkable speed, babbled contentedly in her arms while observing the landscape below with those impossibly alert silver eyes. The stronghold itself had evolved beyond its original function as a refuge. Representatives from dozens of territories had established permanent missions there, but not to negotiate traditional treaties or territorial agreements. Instead, they came to study and implement what was being called the "Aurora Protocols"—frameworks for societies that honored both connection and disconnection, both unity and solitude.

"You are so unfair!" THREE years have passed. There is no Fender. That promised to return to her. She is now eighteen years old, and a lot has happened in the three years she has been without the man. It was the easy joke from Kunle. It was the love that had grown, stubborn and fierce, in the soil of shared survival.

The night they arrived, he even posted something online to make it clear he thought I was copying him. In our seventh year, the gift was the divorce agreement. Seven years, and looking back, the distance between us had grown the entire time without me noticing. Two notifications came through on my phone. One was from Vera that read, “Sean, nine tomorrow morning. Do not forget.” The other was from Austin. “Last night of our seven-day romance. Vera says she wants to make it a night to remember.” My eyes stayed on the paintings for one last moment before I switched off the screen.

“Including agreements with other packs.” “What agreements.” “That’s what took me until 2am.” He picked up a file from the desk and held it but did not yet open it. “Twenty-right years ago the Varen Pack agreed to a territorial agreement with four other packs—a resource sharing plan spanning over sixty thousand acres in the northern part of the region. Regular stuff. Hunting rights, border protocol, shared enforcement.” He paused. “Except that two of the four packs who were supposedly in that agreement want to pretend like they don’t have any. I spoke to Elder Hana from the Greywood Pack at midnight—”

He was very still beside me. “Show me the others,” he said. I walked him through all five. Each attack, each connection it had damaged, the specific relationship it had been designed to weaken. Not just the packs themselves. The bridges between them. The thirty-year agreements and the shared resources and the council seats that got complicated when the pack holding them was suddenly in the middle of a crisis. He listened the whole way through without interrupting. When I finished he stepped back and looked at the whole wall.

She handed me some documents, and I looked at them carefully. There was a non-disclosure agreement. There was a good conduct agreement. There was a justice agreement. The three agreements were clear and concise. In them, I assumed responsibility for opening my mouth, telling secrets, or revealing situations within the pack, as well as taking responsibility for any problems I caused due to my conduct or charges against me. I signed the latter two agreements on trust. “I haven't done anything,” I said without fear. “I am the victim of something, so I trust that you will take the legal measures of presumption of innocence and asylum.”
