I had never been inside a room like this in my life. Stone City didn't have rooms like this. Stone City had shops with paperback novels piled outside for five naira each. Worn covers. Missing pages. Stories that other people had already touched and left behind. This was something else entirely. I moved to the nearest shelf. Ran my finger along the spines without pulling anything out. Just reading the titles. Feeling the texture of the bindings. I stopped at one. A thin volume. Dark blue cover. No image. Just a title in faded gold letters.

“Why not?” Nyx watched the two ports glowing on the map. “Because someday they might need each other again.” He studied her for a long moment. “You think long-term.” “I think survival,” she said. Silence filled the chamber again. Then the doors opened. Professor Halvern entered first. Draeven behind him. Director Valerius last. Their footsteps echoed softly across the chamber floor. Nyx turned toward them. “Perfect timing,” she said. Halvern approached the table, studying the map. His eyebrows rose slightly. “You escalated quickly.”

She whispered drowsily, “She chose him.” He looked down at her, his eyes that were burning red soon softened. They raked her body, taking in each and every single bruise on her, his jaws clenched. But his voice remained low, and warm as he said, “So choose the devil you know, little dove.” His hands traced her face, Suddenly, Domenico burst into the car, and slammed the door. His face smeared with blood, and his body covered in stone debris . His chest heaved frantically

“Tell me your purpose, turtle dove.” At the word ‘turtle dove,’ the eyes glowed green, and the wings of the metallic Dove tried to open in my hands. I had to let it go and watched as it flew around my bunker. I furrowed my brow as I watched it find a perch on a beam, watching me. I’m not sure what it’s supposed to do or why I built it, but at least it didn’t explode. As I stood, intending to inspect the robotic Dove further, my phone started to ring somewhere in the bunker.

My little dove steps even closer to the circle, as she says to her, “Now that is the first thing that you have said to me, that I truly believe to be true. But why and how did you get here?” The Dark Goddess gave out a growl as she turned her back to my little dove, telling me that my little dove was onto something, but what was the question. Knowing my little dove, there was no doubt in my mind that she had an idea why her grandmother was here, and it was the missing link to the whole puzzle.

I pull the book back up and look at the title page once more. ‘The Golden Goddess’ “This book explains the history behind the golden wolf. Why she was created. I thought it might be best to start here.” He gives me a sad smile and looks over at his brothers. “What aren’t you telling me?” I ask, knowing he’s hiding something. He gives me a grim smile, “The golden wolf symbolizes hard times ahead, Sunshine.” He pauses, looking at his brothers again. “I’m afraid with you here, it only means things are probably not going to get much easier for you.”
