I leaned forward slightly, studying my own reflection in the still water beneath the morning light — tired eyes, silver-black hair still slightly tangled from weeks of travel, the same face I'd worn my entire life.
Then, for just a heartbeat, my reflection's eyes weren't pale gold at all.
They blazed pure, molten gold, bright enough to look almost lit from within, before fading back to normal so quickly I nearly convinced myself I'd imagined it.
