He went to the market and bought oranges from the elderly woman who sold fruit. She smiled and gave him two extra, just as she had done for Elena. He went to the seaside and sat on a rock, watching the sun until it set. The sun turned the sea to gold, and seagulls circled overhead. He went to the church and kneeled before the statue of Mother Mary for a long time. He didn't know what he was praying for—perhaps not forgiveness, but just a little peace of mind.

EMBER’S POV The dove’s beak snaps open, and it lets out a painful, hawking shriek—a wet, bubbling rasp of pure agony that no bird should be able to make. I try to drop it, but I can’t let go.
