"Attempt 100: If he still doesn’t care, and my parents still don’t love me, then maybe I’ll stop trying since no one in this world sees me." Tears welled up. Had I really loved him this much? Was I really that broken? Maybe forgetting was a gift. I placed the journal into my suitcase. This part of my life was going with me, but it wouldn’t define me anymore. Then, my phone rang. "Zoe, don’t forget to attend Yvonne’s birthday party the day after tomorrow. Bring a gift," my mother's voice instructed. I started to protest, but she cut me off. "8 p.m. at the Grandview Hotel. Don’t be late."

He pulled the white sheet back over me, covering me with care. "Wait for me, Maddie. I'll come to you when it's done." I hovered behind him, watching his performance with nothing but contempt. He was pouring his guilt into a body that couldn't answer, weeping tears that didn't cost him a thing. In heaven or hell, I never wanted to meet him again. However, I couldn't leave. An invisible thread bound my soul to him. Wherever he went, I had to follow. Jeremy went to a law firm and signed over all of Grant Corporation's shares, properties, and assets to Zayne.

"Ladies and gentlemen," my voice rang out through the microphone, "I'm Lucas Baldwin. As you can see, I'm not this child's father." Gasps and murmurs erupted from the audience below. I caught a glimpse of Mom's and Dad's stunned expressions, Kendra's pale face, and Cody's panicked eyes. "Three years ago, I left home to work on a national defense research project," I continued. My tone was calm, though inside, I was anything but. "But when I came back, I discovered my wife had a child with my brother. That little girl is already two years old."

She moved closer towards her friend as they made their way to the counter to give their order. "Good morning." The beautiful burnet behind the desk politely smiled at them as she tapped a few times on the screen, Amara was the first to answer since she usually came here. "I'll have a Pumpkin Spice Latte, please." She spoke as she fisted her wallet from her bag. Charlotte had never drunk Starbucks coffee she thought the price was way to fucking high, but for this one time she was okay with it. But right now she was confused out of her mind, did it mean that there was pumpkin in the coffee?

The elders exchanged uneasy glances, unsure of what to make of the scandal unfolding before them. "Who says I'm without proof?" I smirked, pulling out a digital recorder. "Here's the juicy bit of Derick and Jasmine's midnight rendezvous from last night. While they played me for a fool, the kid they thought was mine was burning up with fever all alone in his bed!"

That's all I could think of while I watched her undress. She knew I had rejected her. Instead of angry, she just looked hurt. When she shifted, I was enamored. I had never seen anything as beautiful as her. My instincts got the best of me, and before I could think better of it I was dropping clothes and shifting. Her scent was easy to follow. I felt so free racing to her. Taking her sweet scent into my lungs. The closer I got to her, the stronger her delicious scent became.

I stopped at the table in the leaving room. “Goodbye Mr. Graham and Ethan graham” I whispered as I dropped the divorce papers and the severance papers on the table. I cleaned the last trail of tears on my face and walked towards the door, as I opened it I could feel my expression shift to annoyance. “You ungrateful brat”

His skin was warmer than the wool. We stayed like that for a stretch of minutes that refused to be counted. The rain softened against the windows, then returned in a sudden hard sheet that made the glass tremble. Somewhere in the stacks a single book gave up its grip and hit the floor with a muffled sound. Neither of us went to investigate. “Tell me something ordinary, Julian” I said. “Ordinary.” “Since we are stuck together till God knows when, I figured we could get to know each-other deeper.”

I leaned against him and looked at the hydrangeas, the rosemary, and Finn's crooked tag that said Home. "Yeah," I whispered. "I'm good." The girl who once waited behind Bianca for leftovers never imagined she would be loved this firmly. Not accepted after comparison. Not picked up because someone else left. Not a shadow beside another woman's bright life. The only one. The night was good. The wind was good. I was good too.
