The sadness in her tone was heavy, matching the gloom of the ruins. I signaled the advance. If the outside looked neglected, the interior was a graveyard of memories. It was silent…..unnervingly so. How am I supposed to find the eldest woman in a ghost town? A heavy thud startled me. I spun around to see Novel sliding from Kitty’s back, hitting the dirt. I rushed to her side, my heart hammering against my ribs. I wanted to roar at the wolf, who at least had the grace to look guilty, but the sight of Novel’s pale, unconscious face silenced my anger.

I mumbled and shook my head. I stared on the ceiling for a while and I tried recalling Candice's eyes, and her wide smile. It was all crystal clear in my mind, she had five moles on her face. Her face was the sky and her moles traced a constellation. I smiled at the thought, I could recall the little hairs on her face, her wrinkles when she smiled, even her freckles across her nose, it formed a map.

Matthew stopped in his tracks, staring at me in shock. Finally, he just snorted and said, "I’m glad you understand." At dinner, everyone was super friendly to Shirley. Matthew was extra nice, getting her a bowl of soup. However, then Shirley turned white as a ghost and gagged. Matthew was right there, rubbing her back, asking what was wrong. Shirley smiled, kind of embarrassed, "I'm pregnant. About two months along." The room went quiet for a few seconds. Matthew looked shocked, but then he was grinning from ear to ear.

I looked up and saw the words — Green Manor. Green was my family name, and I knew that my home was not far away. The sight sent a sudden cold wave coursing through me; my skin prickled, and I felt an odd queasiness twist deep in my stomach. Old memories lurked just beneath the surface, waiting to rise. When the fear returned, sharp and unbidden, I told Vladimir to stop the car. "Are you all right?" Vladimir reached over and touched my forehead gently. "You're so cold!"

He did that for a few times till he was completely satisfied with his anwer and then he stepped back. The door resonated with a faint hum, and the symbols illuminated, aligning harmoniously.And then the door creaked open with a loud noise. “ Merindale…” Xie gasped as soon as the door was ajar. In front of them was a vast stretch of land of neverending green and Merindale's body lay over it. Motionless and still. Right beside her was Mia. She was also in the exact same condition. “ Mia… ” “ Mother… ”

So I nodded and we left. We walked for a while having silly but meaningful conversations about different things. When we arrived at the border, the hair on my neck stood up. I felt them too late, because at the very minute, I was hit in the head by something hard and I fell to the ground. My vision was blurred but I could see my attackers. Vampires. They approached us, but I didn't see what happened next because I fainted.

The second time, I carried this vial and watched from a safe distance on the far side of the river field as Selene deteriorated—more than enough to provide satisfaction for two weeks. Three weeks have passed now, and I feel the urge to see for myself again. I recall the deeply indented, squared-off prints in the mud from that first trip, the imprints left by a woodcutter’s dray that ran from somewhere near the bend in the river due northeast, straight toward the cluster of houses across the lower ford. It was while following those tracks back to a building’s scullery that I first learned its name: The Green Gable. I go out through the back gate and turn northeast.

Silvano's Pov I exhaled slowly, leaning back in my chair. “If I wanted to kill you, Miss Green,” I said, my voice firm, “I wouldn’t go through the trouble of making you Mac and cheese in the morning when I could be busy working.” Her eyes didn’t leave mine. She still looked unconvinced. She was trying to decide if she should believe me and my words. And I got it. I understood. I wasn't angry at her. After everything she had seen, after everything I had done to her, how could she not be afraid of me?

The glow remained red, steady and calm. Relief slammed through my chest. Just worry. Just exhaustion. Just the sickness of grief and stress. I exhaled a trembling breath, my shoulders sagging- Then I saw it. A glimmer. At first faint, so faint I thought my eyes deceived me. A thread of green flickering beneath the red, barely noticeable. My relief faltered. My breath caught. The green spread slowly, creeping through the red like moss across stone. Subtle at first, then stronger, brighter, until the glow overtook the red entirely.
