His lashes long and dark against his cheeks, one tiny hand clutching the edge of her sleeve as if afraid to drift too far. Daniel sat on the floor beside her, back against the crib. His shoulder brushed her knee, and Theodore’s head rested against her chest as he floated between waking and dreams. In Sophia’s hands lay a book. Not just any book — their book. Handmade. Bound in soft leather. The title pressed in delicate gold script: The Girl Who Waited, and the Man Who Finally Found Her. She turned the first page and began to read, her voice warm and low, colored with memory.

The thought made her pulse quicken, like she was holding a secret that wasn’t meant to be found. She hesitated only a moment before sitting cross-legged on the floor and flipping the cover open. Inside, in messy handwriting, was a title scrawled across the first page: “Collected Stories — From Women, For Women.” Chloe blinked. The handwriting was feminine, rushed, and almost secretive. She turned the page and read the introduction, scrawled in looping letters:

The Book in the World The book was titled simply: The Healed Territory. Elara had not planned the title — it arrived when she was writing the twelfth chapter and she understood it was right because it was accurate. Not the healing process, not the governance methodology, not the theory. The territory after the healing. What it was to live there.

A blue light flashed out of the book, and suddenly the wind was fast enough to open all the sheets of the book before my eyes. I felt my iris come to light when I saw the book in my hand. There are so many whispers that I hear, and they seem to be scrambling to know me. Some of them whispered while singing familiar melodies to my ears.

Not wanting to read more about the poison, I tossed the book back to the stool and walked to the door as my stomach laid a complaint once again― the last straw that broke the Camel's back. Thankfully, guards and handmaids were already trooping out from their tents when the moon disappeared from the sky. I made my way to the kitchen and luckily met a few maidens who processed my request and helped me take back the delicious rib soup and roast fish, which I could not help but fall for, to my room.

Gail showed the two books he had been holding to Al earlier, "You know what book this is? It's a book about the Aima Kingdom." Al took a deep breath, "I've read it. Go now." Gail smiled, "The book you read is only a small part of the book series on the documentation of the Aima Kingdom. This book is book number four and number eight, concerning the Queen of Aima and the Prince of the Kingdom of Aima ."

I also won't beg. I pick up one of the worn volumes and open it. In the beginning, there were two. In the beginning, one male, one female. In the beginning, no war, no famine. In the beginning, love. Within a short time, I'm enthralled. It's like reading a science fiction novel even though I know these events happened. This book is about their history. I stop myself. My history. Excitement took over Ophelia immediately and she rushed to grab the book, it never crossed her mind she would find any book on the ship. She had tears brimming in her eyes and was letting out a sniff. Because that wasn't just an ordinary book she had read. It was her favorite.

She had nothing to do at home and she was sure Lyla wouldn't talk to her throughout the entire day and as for her mother, she would prefer to stay far away from her until her father finally returns. She let out a sigh, stood up, walked towards her door and locked it. She squatted down, stretching her hand underneath her bed to reach the book she had carefully hidden there. After much struggle she was able to reach the book. Her lips curved into a sly smile, holding the book so preciously in her hand. She laid on her bed, admiring the book.
