Couldn’t risk seeing that smirk, or worse, that dark certainty in his eyes.
My voice broke as the words slipped out. “I hate that you make me feel this way.”
For a moment, silence stretched between us, taut and suffocating. Dane’s arms loosened, not enough to let me go, but enough for me to feel the hesitation in him. His chest rose and fell against my back in a slow, unsteady rhythm, and when he finally spoke, his voice wasn’t mocking. It wasn’t arrogant. It was raw.
