Fucking the Dragon always left her sore, but the payoff was worth it. Setting the alarm, she crawled into bed, intending to read for another hour. Lifting the blankets away from the sheets, she caught it out of the corner of her eye, the gap in her bookshelves. The Hobbit lay at an angle, the space Jenny had occupied now empty.

* * * * * "... while he was still chewing away, the first dwarf came back and announced that the sledge was ready. The White Witch rose and went out, ordering Edmund to go with her. The Silmarillion was emblazoned in gold leaf in beautiful flowing script. “It’s an older book, but I thought you might like it,” Mark told her. “I know how much you enjoyed The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings.” She ran her fingers over the beautiful book. “Thank you, Dad.” She handed him her wrapped package. “Merry Christmas.”

Kendra sat in the library with the book, The Hobbit, opened on her lap. When Rex had first shown the room that was lined with books to her, she’d been both intimidated and overwhelmed. She was taught to read by Olga, but the availability of reading material was limited. Therefore, her reading skills were wanting.

It was a book they had read countless times, but each time, it held a new magic, a new wonder for Theo. “Once upon a time,” Hazel began, her voice soft and soothing, “there was a little bear named Barnaby who loved to go on adventures.” Theo’s eyes widened, his attention captivated by the story. He listened intently, his tiny fingers tracing the illustrations, his imagination soaring with each word Hazel spoke. The story of Barnaby the bear, his adventures in the forest, his encounters with talking squirrels and mischievous rabbits, filled the room with a sense of magic and wonder. Theo giggled at Barnaby’s antics, his heart filled with joy.

I look at the title quickly and grin. “Hey there,” he says. “We meet again.” “The Hobbit, huh?” I ask, noting the book he’s reading. “Oh,” he looks down at it and back at me. “Yeah.” I could swear he’s blushing. The barista calls me over and I grab my drink before walking back. “First read?” I ask him. “Oh, yes for The Hobbit. I’ve read Lord of the Rings three times,” he stops and adds, “I hope that’s not too nerdy to say.”

Lumen asked. "Apart from working here, the book club is good." "Yeah? What are you currently reading?" "The book club usually has three books at a time we're reading through. One of Sonny's books, one personal development and one for entertainment. I've finished the first two. I'm on to The Hobbit now." "Oh yeah?" Max perked up. "I really liked that one as a kid.
