The anticipation of holding her in my arms again was killing me. The glass dome came into view as I neared the lake. It was gigantic, larger than the greenhouse back home. A small house could fit inside it. The tinted glass was lilac in shade and the pale moonlight reflected from its surface, giving it a slight glow. It rested right on the bank of the majestic lake which lay frozen due to the winter season.

Deep space exploration. The house I was brought to is built on a lake, surrounded by thick, gnarly trees on three sides and placid water on the remaining one. Nothing cave-like or underground, despite what I’d have imagined from a wolf-related species, and yet odd nonetheless, with its warm materials and large windows.

The lake held the last of the day like a secret—glass-smooth, violet at the edges where the trees leaned in to study their reflections. Fireflies stitched the dark with tiny, erratic stitches of light. Keith’s truck was parked where the road curved away from the water, half-hidden beneath an overhanging maple. He’d found a picnic table tucked near the reeds and covered it with a rough linen cloth, an old habit from jobsites where he’d learned that even plain things could look intentional with the right touch.

“It’s business. You leave now.” Aria stood up. Her legs felt weak. She didn't say goodbye. She walked to the elevator, her back straight, refusing to cry. She was the invisible sister. Invisible people didn’t make scenes. They just disappeared. The Lake House was a rotting corpse of a building. It sat on the edge of a black, still lake, surrounded by encroaching pines that blocked out the sky. The air smelled of mold and damp earth. Inside, it was a maze of dust sheets and shadows.

It was damp from the gentle waves sloshing against the shore, waves created by the chaotic partygoers just fifty feet away. The patch of lake we occupied was concealed by Holden’s odd, shaped house. It curved around this portion of the lake like a protective barrier, making a little alcove that felt separate from everything else. With the strings of lights woven back and forth between the slender fruit trees, it felt like a different world. Only a small trail led back to the house, which was fairly easy to spot even though everyone seemed to pass it in favor of the house. “It must be incredible living on your own lake. The conversation seems to be troubling both of them, which is not my problem. The door of the room I’m in suddenly opened and Madeline worked in after a slight knock, “oh, I see you have found Jacob,” she said smiling. ”Or he found me,” I said, closing up the curtains, “how is he here?” I asked her. “His family has a lake house around here, so I’m guessing he is here for some woods for a fireplace,” she said and I nodded, sitting down. “It seems everyone has a lake house,” I sighed.

The bridge was decorated colorfully with what seemed like artificial flowers that glowed. As I treaded the length of the bridge with Evelyn trailing behind me, the other side of the lake became vivid and I was dazzled by what I saw. The structures I didn't see were lake houses, more like houses on a street block. Several lake houses were built a distance apart in a row in the middle of the lake with wooden bridges leading to them. Surrounding the lake houses were different colorful luminescent water plants as well as swans in the lake. When I got off the bridge to the shore of the other side of the lake, I was met by a middle-aged bald man in a black suit and a bow tie.

Bruno explained. "Perfect, then, my beloved prince, let's go to our next destination," Nicole said. A couple of hours later, they arrived at Lake George and made their way to a house on the outskirts of town, right in front of the lake. Nicole really liked the house; it was Victorian-style, just like many houses in the area. "Dad, the house has a part built over the lake," Santi exclaimed. "Yes, son.
