I rolled my eyes in disbelief, “Wolves, Vampires and whatnot don’t exist Mrs Maisel. I’m pretty sure it’s just a cooked up story by some story tellers from your— “No!!” She cried out, I jolted sharply at the sudden outburst, “My husband was a demon Hunter! He died in the hands on an alpha wolf!!” Mrs Maisel’s husband died in the military, from a chickenpox outbreak. I nodded quietly and waited until she was done ranting before I reached the creek. The woman was a nutcase, and a pretty persistent one. She made sure I had wore a bracelet made of some twigs around my wrists, saying it would protect me from evil spirits.

Vivienne shakes her head, “He took advantage of me. When I saw you in that hospital bed, your back was covered in burns, and the doctors said you might not survive. It broke something in me. I’m not the type of woman who cheats.” “You never came to see me,” I say through gritted teeth. “I did. When they first brought you in. Before the surgery. They were still trying to remove your clothes. I ran away when I saw it.” I scoff, “So you are the type that runs when things get hard. I’m glad I didn’t marry you. I deserve a woman who accepts all of me, even my scars.” “Do you think your wife could stomach it. I’d like to see what her reaction would be. What does she do when she sees your scars?”

“Those two years when your legs were paralyzed—yes, I wasn’t by your side. But why? Because I was out finding a cure for you! “I went into the hottest deserts, battling sandstorms and blistering heat to find the plants needed for extracting those medicinal compounds. My team and I were nearly swallowed by quicksand. We faced storms that almost killed us. But I never backed down because I wanted you healed. I wanted the research to succeed more than anyone else. “And what about you? While I was risking my life for you, what were you up to? You were sleeping with my cousin. You hid it from me for two years! And you even used ‘business trips’ as an excuse to marry her in America!

His voice was guttural, he looked at me and spoke the words that sent chills through me, “Bride.” “Fuck that.” I yelled at him before I turned and ran. My team can come after him, I knew how possessive vampires were with their brides and I was a hunter for crying out loud. No way would he catch me. He followed, but I was faster. There was an advantage to being a Valkyrie, I sped up and sidestepped around people as I worked my way through the crowd heading for the exit hoping he didn’t have any other guards hidden in the busy establishment. The order could send another squad after this guy.

The Caucus of Hunters was a tight-knit group of representatives from the best Hunter families. They consisted of seven members from different families across the New York metropolis, and acted as the governing body for the race of Hunters present in the city. George Ravenwood, Celia Ravenwood's husband, was the head of the Caucus. He had been away on some Hunter business concerning the dead bodies when Maddie had been brought into the Manor, so she hadn't had the liberty of meeting the man.
