I was in Jasmine's bedroom, sitting beside her bed while she snuggled under her covers. Rain had started tapping against the window, filling the room with a soft sound.
"Read the dragon book today, Margaret," Jasmine murmured, her eyes already half-closed.
"Alright, sweetie."
I smiled and reached toward the wooden bookshelf beside her nightstand.
I pulled out her favorite hardcover storybook.
As I opened it, something heavy and stiff slipped from between the pages and landed face-down on the rug beside my shoe.
