The bright street lamps outside made it look exceptionally beautiful. "Look. It's starting to snow." All traces of sleepiness immediately vanished for both Dylan and me. Dylan hugged me tightly from the back as we both admired the first snow falling outside the window. Then, he whispered into my ear, "I love you." Everything was so breathtakingly perfect, transcending all worldly chaos and strife.

But the next day, he was found dead in his living room. He had finally given up. He left behind a letter and ended his life with the same dangerous combination that nearly killed me—cephalexin and alcohol. When I returned home, the police gave me the envelope. Inside it was a brief note filled with apologies and well wishes. "I'm sorry, Grace. I was wrong. I hope you find happiness. Congratulations on your marriage. If there's a next life, I hope I'll be the one to chase after you." But if there was indeed a next life, I never wanted to meet him again.

How I could have spent so long wondering if we’d ever have this chance, and now it was ours, quiet and simple and real. Taylor waved at us from across the gym, nudging a friend to come dance, and I shook my head, laughing under my breath. Tonight wasn’t about the rest of the world. It wasn’t about apologies or past mistakes or the chaos we’d carried with us like extra skin. It was about this, this quiet moment where the music faded into a background hum, where the lights sparkled but didn’t blind, where his hand in mine told me more than I’d dared hope for.

Finally, my shaky hands opened the door and I walked in, sporting my usual dead and emotionless look as my Nike kicks hit the ground softly.
