When I saw Jessica again, she looked completely worn down. Her stomach was flat now. I had nothing left to say to her. So I turned around and walked away. But Jessica acted like a different person. She followed right behind me. She even swallowed her pride and apologized. "I paid off Ryan and Noah. They're gone. They won't bother you anymore. And don't worry about my mother. Michael… let's go home." Hearing her say "go home" felt almost laughable.

"You don't have to pretend it's simple. It's allowed to be complicated and beautiful at the same time." "I know. I just wanted one thing today that wasn't complicated." "That's fair too." I'd spent the better part of the last two weeks chasing dead ends anyway, and by that Tuesday I was running out of places left to look. Two more girls from the party, both with fragments as useless as Bree's, taller, dark clothing, gone before anyone got a real look. A guy Priya knew who'd apparently bragged for a week after about "knowing something," who turned out, once I actually cornered him, to know absolutely nothing at all, just enjoying the attention that came with pretending he did.

"Every gift you ever gave us came in two. Except the cake. Why am I always last?" The room went quiet. He frowned. "This is how it's always been. What's wrong with you today?" My mother shot me a look. "She's older. She's better. That's the order. If you were half as good as her, you'd go first." I had nothing left to say. Grace made her wish. The family sang around her. When it was my turn, the candles had almost burned out. Dante shrugged. "No more candles. Wishes don't mean anything anyway. You can make one next year, Eleanor."

There was no refusal to give up. There was nothing. I pulled my hand back fast. Her skin had not burned me. The feeling was coming from elsewhere. A support pillar beside me cracked before I even realized I had hit it and the stone splintered under my palm. The sound rolled through the chapel like thunder. I picked up a silver chain from the debris and threw it. It went into the far wall so deep that only the last few links were still visible. This was not winning. This was stealing. The hunters had wanted both of us. If they could not kill me they would kill what was hunting me. If they could not kill her they would use her to hurt me.

Author’s Note: Hey fam! So remember when I gave a vague estimate for how many chapters were left? Well, I am here to confirm that chapter 79 will be the end of SIR. I get so emotional just thinking about it, and I am not even remotely ready for it to be over. But let's do the damn thing together. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ David leads me into his apartment, not commenting on the mess he has to guide me through. Or maybe he doesn’t even notice.

The things I loved about him had turned into the very things he used to stab me in the back. Yeah, he was the worst. "Cheating is cheating. With those final words, I headed straight for the lab building. He did not come after me, just stood there watching me. He knew me all too well.
