The Last Chapter Series Novels & Stories

Don began the last chapter in November of the tenth year. Not the Mexico City piece — that was the fifth piece, the penultimate essay in the book, which he had been writing since the return from Mexico City in late October. The last chapter was something different: the chapter that Don had named in January as the chapter he knew the content of and did not yet have the form for. The chapter that was not an essay about a place but the explicit statement of what the whole book had been building toward.

The knowledge is in the space between them, in the air, in the accumulated weight of all the mornings that have come before. --- This is not the end of anything. The last chapter of the story is not an ending—it's the continuation, the ongoing present tense, the life moving forward into the next morning and the next Tuesday and the next Sunday sofrito and the next thing that happens to them and that they build from. The last chapter is the chapter that acknowledges that there is no last chapter, that the story goes on, that the only ending is the one they stop telling. This is Tuesday.

"It was someone who loved you, Elara. Someone the world forgot so we could live." The Last-Stand Valor had won the day, but at the cost of the family’s foundation. The sky was still cracked, and the Exterminator Fleet was still out there, but the Internal-Invasion had failed. The Haven was quiet, save for the sound of the waterfall and the soft, grieving hum of an Anchor who had lost a part of her soul she couldn't even name.

THE LAST CHAPTER WAS MISTAKENLY REPEATED BECAUSE OF CONNECTION ISSUES AND I ALSO HOPE EVERYONE WAS ABLE TO DEDUCE THROUGH THE CHAPTER TITLE AT THE TOP OF EVERY CHAPTER THAT IT WAS REPEATED. I WISH I COULD DELETE IT BUT I HAVE TO WAIT FOR SOMEONE ON GOODNOVEL'S SIDE TO GET IT DONE. IF ANYONE ALREADY UNLOCKED IT, I AM REALLY SORRY. IT WAS FAR FROM INTENTIONAL. MY SINCERE APOLOGIES!

Aini wakes up early in the morning with the hope that she won't collide with Nia, Nadine, or Niar. The dinner he skipped last night wasn't something he wanted to remember at all. Just thinking back on it made her feel worse. He wakes up with a headache and memories of last night that stick like a stain that's hard to let go. A long sigh left Aini's lips, she watched the window in her room, hoping to be as free as the birds that fly there.
