I promise, offering her another thankful smile before turning and heading towards the door. As I step out into the hallway, the air feels a little lighter, the weight of that looming conversation finally behind me. Still, I can’t help the dry laugh that escapes me as I walk back towards the lecture hall. Alpha Drake Marshall gets what Alpha Drake Marshall wants. I push open the door to my lecture hall, the scent of chalk and old paper meeting me like an old friend. The lights flicker on above as I make my way to the front, dropping my bag beside the podium and flipping open my laptop. The projector hums to life, casting the first slide onto the screen behind me, an intricate illustration of

Cole once again on the ninth day for another one-on-one lecture born out of pretense. However, he must be exhausted already, as he sighs on seeing me. “Please do not tell me you missed something again, Ms. Stone." He's almost groaning. I shake my head, flashing a wide smile. “Don’t worry. I’m not making you re-lecture me today. In fact, I was thinking I could ask you about something I found out in the content of the future lecture instead.” I lay my book on Cole’s desk and start riffling through it. Although I’m looking down at it, I can tell that the lecturer is looking at me.

That is how the right sentences always come. That the third book's argument — the first life as research, the knowledge of the unchosen as the most precise knowledge of the actual want — is ready to be written. Not because the argument is complete. Because the distance is sufficient. I am fifty-two years old and the lecture hall was thirty-two years ago and the first life was seventy-seven years ago in total, and that is enough distance to see the thing clearly without being inside it.

They know I’ll be busy with my professor now. Thank God it’s the last lecture. No one’s coming back. And now… we have unlimited time. The second the last student walks out, I rise from my seat at the back, smirk carved into my face, and stalk toward her. She doesn’t move. Doesn’t even breathe. She grips the desk with both hands like it’s the only thing keeping her upright after the sweet torture. Her chest rises and falls. Her glasses are slightly fogged. Her eyes are wide. Pleading.

I feel so emotionally and physically drained from the session. "Good work today everyone! See you next week!" The lecturer shouts to us over the sound of students loading up their bags and eagerly escaping the lecture hall. I try to move a little faster than I usually do, I have a shift at the bookstore straight after this lecture and I really hate being late. I'm also far too polite, so I get stuck behind a wave of people who I've allowed to cut in front of me.

"And then she'll understand it's about everything." --- That evening David and I sat in the study. The fire going. The December dark outside. The book on the desk between us. "Read me the last page," he said. I looked at him. He looked back. "Go on," he said. I picked up the book. Turned to the last page. Read it aloud. *What remains is love. Directed with intention. Going forward. As it always has. As it always will.* The fire. The study.

He strode down the aisle with his laptop case in hand. As part of his habit, his gaze swept the room, professional, until it snagged on her. Something dark flickered across his expression before he turned to the podium. “Good afternoon,” he said, voice crisp. “Let’s pick up where we left off.” The lecture was on narrative reliability. He talked about narrators who lie, about the relationship between truth and storytelling. Aria tried to take notes as fast as he spoke, because as part of her job as his T.A., she would need to share the summary of what he taught in the class group online.

"You've written it carefully. Too carefully. She deserves the full weight of what she actually did." "It's a lecture," I said. "Not a personal tribute." "They're not mutually exclusive," Hope said, with the flat, precise certainty of someone who had thought about this. "The personal is what makes the professional argument land. You've taught me that. The lecture needs more of Diana." I rewrote that section. The lecture hall was full on the evening in May when I delivered it, the specific, attentive quality of a professional audience that had come because they expected to be challenged and were prepared to engage with what challenged them.

Nothing has changed, I still love to sit at the front to fully put my attention on the lecture. When Gian started to speak, I took notes and recorded the lecture. I am not just intelligent but I'm also diligent, that was my advantage. Others are intelligent but not diligent. Putting intelligence and diligence together, the result is exponential. I graduated summa cumlaude on both of my degress. After the lecture we had a thirty minute break. Taking into mind what Andrei would feel, I steered clear of Dr. Klaus and talked to other participants. I thought I had already escaped Gian but when the lecture began he called me on the stage to assist him.

"Thank you, tomorrow's your turn" "Yeah I'm preparing for it"...she said. "Okay"...I replied and we focused our attention to our lec. speaking infront. • • • • • • • • Afternoon came and our lec. had already dismissed us so I'm now preparing to go to my work. Lesley had hone first because she wants to be fully prepared at her presentation so I let her be. And she doesn't want to sleep late so she's working hard to finished it as early as she can.
