It felt as though someone was reaching into his chest and pulling apart his heart piece by piece. That was the day he lost her,the love of his life. Her absence had left a hole in his heart that he had tried to fill for years. Richard inhaled deeply as his chest tightened. He could feel his ribcage pressing hard against his heart as realization dawned on him. That day, he had lost the one person who brought joy to his life. And even the company he had chosen over her would never be big enough to fill the hole she left behind. The beep on his phone pulled him back from his thoughts. He wiped his watery eyes and fished the device out of his pocket.

I saw that there was none missing. That led me to the realization that the missing piece was a person. Who could it be then?

I slowly twisted my body, and crosses our distance. I grabbed the frame then inspect it above my palm. I caressed the edges, removing the excess dust. I sighed in defeat while nibbling on my lower lip. Something was missing. Part of me was still torn. I know my parent’s death almost caused me to lose my sanity. Yet, there was a profound, and larger hole that is still apparent here in my heart. I clenched my hand into a balled fist tightly before realizing that I was bawling my eyes out.

Someday when Alex was ready, when she wasn't about to concentrate on law school, she could discover what I would soon be leaving. It was a good tale, a story of fabrication, and one I knew was a lie. The pain within me from the moment we woke was too intense. The evidence pointed to one conclusion: Nox hadn't taken a piece of my heart. He had the entire thing. Repair would never come. It wasn't possible to repair what no longer existed. With each breath, the void of my missing heart ached in my chest.

"It’s about family." My throat tightened. "I wouldn't want to go into much details, but for years," she continued, voice trembling, "I lived with a piece of my heart missing. I thought I’d lost hope. I thought I’d never find her again. But by some miracle—" she smiled through the tears welling in her eyes. "my missing piece found her way home." The crowd murmured, emotion rippling through the room. My nails dug into my palm as I bit down on my lip, fighting the tears burning my eyes.

“Back away from him. Now.” But the woman ignored her, gaze fixed on Adrian. “The Heart is drowning,” she whispered. “Too much input. Too many voices. It was never meant to function wild. It needs structure.” “It needs freedom,” Adrian shot back. “Freedom without guidance becomes noise.” Adrian glared. “People aren’t noise.” The woman sighed. “You’re sentimental. That’s why you can’t do what must be done.” She held the disc out. “This is the missing component. The Confluence Key. It will align the Heart’s entire field.”

“I think you, out of everyone in the world, need one person who can show you how to love again.” “And you think your cousin could do that for me?” she asked as she watched him as he thought about her question. The simple question was more than he had thought it would be. He knew it was two-sided at best. “I think my cousin could help you. I don’t know if it would be the key or not. I do think that he would help open your heart again in a way I don’t think anyone else can. You had someone like him before, so you understand.” Garrett said. “He is alone now. He needs help in life and people to love him back. For you, it may help both of you.”

No big declarations or dramatic confessions. Just the soothing sounds of the house and the gentle rhythm of two hearts learning to be soft again. ---

He must be going out of his mind at this moment, wondering where I am, why I am not there. The picture of his face-confused, hurt, betrayed-brings another wave of pain and I collapse into the chair beside my bed. I want to explain it to him, but how can I? How can I tell him that after all these years together, after everything we've been through, I still wasn't sure? That I still felt incomplete?
