Ashley teased, pointing at Garnet. Garnet simply smiled, while John cleared his throat awkwardly. "Okay… maybe this year," he said hesitantly. Garnet turned to look at him, eyes wide with surprise. He had no choice. He had to lie. "That’s settled then! I’ll call Esmeralda later—I have good news for her!" Diana said excitedly. Then, the unexpected happened. "I don’t want to get pregnant." The room fell into silence. All three of them turned to look at Garnet.

“What’s going on? You’ve been in here a while.” “Well, Xavier was just letting me know dinner was wrapping up.” The lie rolled off my tongue before I could think, and I managed a small smile to make it more convincing. “I was also lost in our little discussion that I lost track of time.” Frank looked at me for a moment like he found something blue in what I said and then Xavier, I couldn’t read the plain expression he had, it was the kind of look that made you think he had some suspicious thoughts. My pulse hammered in my ears but I held his gaze, kept my shoulders lose and held on to the smile.

Even though I wanted to tell him the truth I wasn't sure I would ever be able to. I didn't flinch as he crossed the space between us then, slow, like he was giving me every chance to step back if I wanted to. I didn't. "I can live with a lot of things," he said, close enough now that I had to tip my head to hold his eyes. "I've decided I can't live with you lying to me ever again. I lived through that Cassie and a lot worse. From now on we are honest with each other." My throat went tight. Because there was one huge lie between them… no two huge lies between them. The fact I wasn't Cassie and that I had thrown the morning after pill. Guilt settled low in my gut.
