There it was. The ledger. Black leather, worn at the edges, its pages thick with ink. She flipped it open, her breath catching as names and numbers spilled across the paper: shipments, ports, bribes, politicians bought and paid for—routes carved in blood. It wasn’t just a ledger—it was an empire written in code and ink. Her chest tightened. If Dante wanted this, it wasn’t for leverage—it was for war.

Chapter 6 I burned the letter before dawn. The flames curled around Dominic’s handwriting until every word turned to ash. I understood why he had asked me to do it. He did not want me dragged into further trouble. He did not want the children to grow up under another shadow. He did not want the village to twist his final choice into another story for people to gossip about. After Marcus and his friends died, the village changed overnight. No one came to our house demanding money anymore.

There was one solitary, big book on a low table between them. He didn't move as his eyes met hers. "The consent is the matter at hand. It must be freely bestowed, not coerced, and whispered three times into the skin of his throat." “Do you have any idea what sort of story you're going to be reading me tonight?”

Arian's pov I never thought a book club meeting could feel like a battlefield. Today, we are reading The Art of Forbidden by Linda Lively, and from the very moment I flipped through its pages, my face had been hot. The story is about a powerful president who was secretly in love with his male secretary, and if that wasn’t bold enough, the prose was filled with intimacy, longing, and heat. Naturally, everyone thought it would be for people to take turns reading aloud. But I wasn't really in the mood to read, not after what the police said to me.

She asked. “The book of The Council.” Her eyes widened. “There’s only one copy of that book, and it’s locked away in Kvenland village. How did you—” “I snuck into my adoptive parent’s secret chamber and stole it,” I said sheepishly. “Oh, honey,” she said and held my hand. “That book was written by none other than the Council. Of course, only their good deeds would be showcased in that book. But, as far as I know, they colonized all of the villages that they helped.”

I had attempted this for another book before but it didn't work out like this so I am glad that I was able to finish this story in the end. This was also the longest story I have written so I learned a lot from it and you all. Thank you everyone for joining me on this journey and for staying with me to the end! The more I write, the more I realise just how massive this book is going to be. It’s easily going to be my longest one yet… and believe it or not, we’re not even halfway there. There’s still so much to unfold, so many layers to explore, and I’m trying my best to keep the pace fast without leaving plot holes behind. So I hope you’ll stick with me for the long haul — we’re going to be on this journey together for a while!
