I walked in, the door chiming as the hinges spread apart. The sound echoed through the walls. The tall walls of books hanging from one end to another. I had no clue how I'd find a single book in this castle of a library, but one thing was certain, I wasn't leaving until I found it. No matter how long it took. "The library is closed for tonight." An old voice echoed through the walls. I gasped, turning to the sound. My gaze fell on an old woman, her grey hair falling over her shoulders. Her eyes frozen in a frown.

Every footstep sounded like thunder to my ears, but I forced myself to keep going. The library doors were massive oak things that creaked like dying animals when you opened them. But tonight, they were already slightly ajar, letting a sliver of lamplight spill into the corridor. Perfect. I pressed myself against the wall next to the entrance and listened. Voices drifted from inside—Lander's distinctive arrogant tone, and someone else I couldn't identify. "—told you it would take time," the unknown voice was saying. "These things can't be rushed."

It's a complete bliss to just wander your eyes over those beautiful dialogues and expect nothing more than it. I started reading and unconsciously started flipping pages as I read the story. I was completely into the book until- "Yes- she's here. I found her." I frowned at the new voice in the library. The only people who visit this library are the librarian, who barely talks, and Mr. Mebbin, who just comes here to chill, and the cleaner. But, that voice belonged to none of the three so I stretched myself and looked over my shoulder to look at the grinning Bretton Parker.

The city glow hit the planes of his jaw, making him look like he’d been carved out of the night itself. “Call me Midnight,” he said. His voice was low, carrying a weight that made her skin prickle. “And I know exactly who you are, Lila. I know you touch yourself every night. I know you lie here imagining a stranger who comes in and tells you what to do. I know what you crave when nobody is looking.” He leaned against the wall, his gaze dropping from her face to the glistening toy still inside her. His eyes didn’t waver. There was no shame in his look, only a terrifyingly calm observation.

The only place where the whispers and the glares stopped, where I could just shut my brain off in peace. “Hale!” The librarian’s voice made me jolt. “You need to leave.” She was an older lady with greying hair and large spectacles that magnified her hawk like eyes. She reminded me of the librarian from Monsters University. “Yes,” I said quickly, scooping the thick history textbook in my arms. “I’m leaving. Just putting this back.”

he growled, his hand gripping the back of my neck to keep me steady. "Just do it," I whimpered, my head lolling back. "Please, just—" CREAK. The sound of the heavy double doors at the far end of the auditorium swinging open was like a gunshot. I froze, my heart leaping into my throat. "I'm telling you, the library is packed," a male voice echoed through the vast space, followed by the soft scuff of sneakers and the rustle of heavy backpacks. "The Annex is usually empty at night. We can get through the entire case study here without someone shushing us every five minutes."
