I looked up and my stomach dropped. Aziel Nightbane. The monster himself. His golden eyes burned down at me with pure hate. Up close he smelled like blood and smoke and something darker that made my wolf stir. “Who are you running from boy?” he growled. His voice was low and rough like gravel under boots. His grip tightened on my arm hard enough to bruise. I gasped for air and forced words out even though my throat felt tight. “Please. I am nothing. Just a slave omega. Let me go and I will disappear. You will never see me again I swear it.”

Then suddenly, the operator shouted, "There's something wrong with this chip!" The entire room went silent. She carefully sliced it open with a blade. "It's a dual-layer implant. The outer layer is a standard emotional regulator, but inside… There's a memory alteration chip." Ophelia's face went pale. Her legs gave out, and she collapsed to the floor. [Altering memories to influence the verdict? That's insane.] [So those scenes of Ophelia caring for Gabriel were all fake?] [Then who's the real monster here?] The judge's expression turned grave as he walked over to me.

"Why wouldn't I be? No one would like associate with a monster" He hugged her from behind, placing his chin on her shoulder. "You are not a monster. That is why you need to get use to animal blood so you won't get kicked out of Woodville and I can't let you be out there all on your own" Willow picked up the bag and sipped again. "I can get used to this. It's not bad. But I'll warn you not to get this close to me. I can hear your blood flow in your veins"

His blood was a hot rush in my mouth as it coated my fangs; I wanted to bite clean through his throat to feel the rush of his life bleeding out. "Konrad!" Mom yelled. She brought me back to myself before the bloodlust could overpower my thoughts. I wondered if she knew what I had been thinking. Was she trying to control the monster in me? Was it even right to say I had a monster inside or was it more I was a monster? I was prepared for her to tell me to control myself and stop. I was used to being scolded for being who I really was---but I wasn't used to what Mom said next.

Which is why I have left the sanctuary of my study tonight, to get more blood. The monster inside me is threatening to take over, and if he wins the battle within me, then I cannot stop him from killing. I have been starving him for days and the bags of blood don’t taste the same as it does fresh from the vein. He hates it, but there are bigger things at play here than his greed and they have to take precedence.

“You’re still afraid.” I met his gaze. “No.” My voice was steady. “I’m not afraid of what lives inside me.” I lifted my chin. “I fear what you want me to be.” His golden eyes flickered. “And what do you think that is,” I exhaled. “A monster.” His smirk widened. “And if that’s who you were always meant to be?” I clenched my jaw. “Then I’ll pick something different.”

Her eyes meet mine one last time, and there is something unspoken there—something heavy with expectation. “You chose to become the monster,” she says quietly. “Now learn what it means to wield it.” And just like that, the path forward is no longer theoretical. It has a destination. And a name. The Butcher. And somewhere deep inside me, something ancient and unfamiliar stirs—like it’s been waiting for this war far longer than I have. The way I usually do things. It was unconscious and uncontrollable. She was appetizing, which made my plan difficult. I didn’t think I was going to want her this much. I didn’t think I was going to feel a different emotion other than hate for the enemy. Why do I feel this way? He was experiencing a violent internal conflict with himself. A tiny, logical part of his mind was urgently telling him that he should let the terrified girl go. She was nothing more than an innocent, disposable maid who worked in his massive house. But his inner monster absolutely wouldn't allow him to step away. The dark demon inside him just wanted to violently rip the uniform dress off of her body, throw her down onto his bed, and take her right then and there. He easily conceded the mental battle to his inner monster. He had absolutely no intention of letting her go.
