I grabbed the box of gifts I’d carefully wrapped earlier and walked out, heart thudding. One step at a time, I descended the stairs, reminding myself to breathe. I couldn’t stop smiling. I was ready to meet my new family. Then I saw him. Tall. Dressed in black. That face. The box of gifts slipped from my hands and tumbled to the floor with a loud thud. Standing beside my father was Ashton Vince. My stepbrother.

“Do you want to show me the rest of your story next time?” His lips quivered, and he nodded, a small but meaningful gesture. “I’ll finish it,” he said quietly. “I promise.” I could feel the weight of everything shifting, the edges of the battle we were both fighting starting to blur. For a moment, just a brief moment, it felt like we had won something small. Something real. Before Clara could interrupt again, Victoria stepped in, her heels clicking on the floor like a ticking clock. She had that smile calm, controlled, and entirely too perfect.

The way she pressed herself back against the door like she was trying to disappear into it. I grew angry with myself for even thinking about her this way. Why did I notice how innocent and pretty she looked standing there? She is forbidden to me. She is my father's stepdaughter now. I must stay away from her no matter what. I should hate her and her mother for walking into this house and changing everything. Yet I could not stop thinking about her, no matter how hard I tried to push the thoughts away. I left the balcony and walked down the quiet hallway toward the stairs. As I passed my father's study, I heard low voices coming from behind the door. I stopped walking and listened carefully,

They just put on a mask of courage. And I usually don't interrupt them. I lay back, quietly watching her unravel. "Say something! Please!" Still quiet and watching. I was patiently waiting for her to complete "The Four-Step Drop." Everyone follows the same breakdown sequence. Step one always starts with resistance. And by step four? They don't remember what pride tastes like. All I had to do was fuel it with my silence. She had already taken the first step. I like it when people squirm under my scrutiny.

Step siblings. “Don’t act all shy now.” Hasan steps fully into my bathroom, unbothered by the running shower. “Remember when you snuck into my room last night and felt me up?” his voice lowers into a sultry delicious tone that urged me to get on my knees and s*ck his c*ck.

He slings an arm around Mama’s shoulders; “Naomi and I will get married very soon. I need the extra space for my new wife.” Three seconds. That is all it takes for everything to go haywire. One moment, Zakari is boiling at the foot of the stairs, and the next, he’s lunging for his father with a loud, animalistic roar. Fists and blood fly in equal proportions as Zakari pins Sebastian to the wall and proceeds to pummel his face like a punching bag. “Somebody help!” Mama screeches, “they’re going to kill each other! Please, help!"
