52: Knoxville's phone rang, shrill in the silence. He picked it up, his deep voice answering, On the other end was Henry, his tone laced with a hint of excitement. "Sir, our private investigator just called. He's found Mr. Jenkins' daughter. She's living in a mud house on the outskirts of the city with her son and the man she's been dating." Knoxville's grip on the phone tightened, his mind racing with the implications. "Get the full details, Henry. We need to be there tonight." The call ended, and Knoxville's thoughts turned to the task at hand.

I was jerked back to the present by a hand tapping lightly on my shoulder. "Stop daydreaming," my father snapped as he stared down at ms. "We're here." I looked out the window to see that a small chapel stood before us. It was elegant and looked private. This was definitely the kind of place where inconvenient marriages quietly took place. The chauffeur opened my door. I stepped out and instantly began to stretch my legs which were stiff from the journey. My father took a step closer to me in order to straighten my tie one last time.

We arrived in Huntsville just as the sun was beginning to set. Golden light illuminated the desolate street–weeds working up through the concrete, bordered up buildings sloping ever more sideways, and graffiti painted across almost every available surface. The town had been abandoned for almost thirty years, yet cars still sat against the curbs and the church at the end of the road remained untouched, its stained-glass windows still in place.

Unlocking the pickup’s cab, he climbed in, turned over the engine, and drove to the trailhead parking a couple miles from his house in his exclusive neighborhood. He knew this trail well even in the thick gloom of night. Countless times it had been the start and end point for his hunts, as he called them, clandestine excursions into other neighborhoods, the outlying campgrounds or even other cities in pursuit of his latest female object. Nick’s feet trudged the familiar path by rote, the faint crunch of his feet accompanied by an animal orchestra of crickets and the random calls of night birds under the starlight.
