“His main thought was getting you out of here as well.” It was weird that Henry and Gavin were working together on this. “Honestly, Gavin, I—” My voice trailed off as I caught something from across the room. It looked like a notebook lying on the floor. But how could a simple notebook survive the explosion? Gavin narrowed his eyes at me, confused as to what I was looking at. Then he saw it as well and he looked even more confused. “Stay here,” he ordered me as he went to retrieve the notebook. He frowned as he stared at the cover.

I had seen the way he had went on full blown alert. "Let us check what the problem is." He said and stood up, moving closer towards the window. "This doesn't seem natural." I nodded and followed him. I stood beside him by the window and peered outside, scanning the whole environment. I wasn't surprised when I eventually found out what the problem was. There was a wizard standing right outside the apartment where Gabby lived and twirling his hands in the air in a circular motion as he fixed his gaze intently on the house.

The reminder of that makes me almost laugh instantly, but I hold it back in just so I don’t sound like a maniac. It’s not because what she said is funny, but rather because it’s such a bad, terrible lie. One I would have never imagined Elara would say to me. Damn it. “Nathaniel,” Theo’s voice pulls me out of my thoughts, and my attention turns towards him. He’s now standing in the living room doorway holding a notebook. His expression is serious, lips pursed into a thin line, and his hair is a mess, looking like he has ran his hand through it. Which, judging by the tiredness in his eyes, is true.

What did that supposed to mean? Sky did not answer him. Her gaze landed on his desk. It was… neat. Almost aggressively so. A single notebook stacked square with the edge. A pen placed parallel to it, not touching. His phone face down. No photos. No clutter. No stupid trinkets. No sign that anyone actually lived there. She stepped closer to it, grateful for the excuse to move, to put something solid between them. “You organize like a robot,” she said, too quickly. Too loud. “Do you alphabetize your thoughts too?”

“Apparently not.” Adrian closed the notebook. “We're not done.” He took Evelyn's hand. “Not even close.” And somewhere outside the old estate, Richard watched the house from a distance. He smiled. Because Adrian had found the notebook. Exactly as he had planned.

That should make it easier. It makes every breath worse. Julian stands near the front right corner with his notebook against his chest. The orange color of dusk filtered into the big, quiet house through the windows of Nate’s mansion. Nate himself was sitting in a low armchair in the guest room, elbows resting heavily on his knees, while his hands were holding a glowing tablet. His frame was slouched forward while his sleeves were rolled to his elbows. His brows were drawn tight as he stared into the screen. There were no two ways about it….whatever he looked at, it wasn’t good. On the screen were photos.

I got up and wandered into the house. Walking past the main living room, I saw Gail cuddled up with the man Serena had called Tony. She was gazing at him blissfully. He was drawing in a sketch pad and completely ignoring her. It was strange, I wouldn’t be interested in someone who did that. I shrugged and continued on to the apartment door. I went in and looked around. It was a simply designed apartment. There was a little living room and a kitchenette at the end of a small hallway. On my left, I saw a closed door with a note on it. The note said ‘Next Door’.

I looked at the shelves lined with books, and the huge desk with the chair behind it. It looked kinda empty. Not a lot of stuff was in the room. I went to one carton on the shelf and opened it, curious as to the contents. I saw picture frames covered in a light sheen of dust. I raised one to look at it and saw Nathan, dressed in a black suit, with a grim look on his face.

I wondered as I rang the doorbell and the door automatically opened, it had a fingerprint scanner when you touched it. Trudy was the first to welcome me with an excited bark, I laughed as I pet her and scratched her belly, the large dog lay down enjoying the whole thing as she stuck her tongue out.
