Marissa felt a surge of gratitude, knowing that these gifts were not just material items but symbols of the love and support that surrounded her. Among the gifts, one particularly caught her attention—a beautifully bound book filled with handwritten recipes from the village's oldest residents. This was a treasure she had always wanted, as cooking had been a cherished pastime shared with her mother. The book was a collection of family recipes, each page telling a story of love, tradition, and the joy of gathering around the table. As Marissa flipped through the pages, she could almost hear the laughter of her family and friends echoing through the years.

I was sprawled on the bed, feeling as though every bone in my body had been shattered. The nurse brought my baby, Avery Sinclair, over to give me a quick look. He was a boy with a wrinkled little face and a loud, piercing cry. Excusing myself to use the restroom, I endured the searing pain coursing through my body and made my way toward the restroom at the end of the corridor. It was close to my sister-in-law, Verna Bloom's, hospital room.

The dinner table fell into a dead silence. “Sweetheart, come with me.” Mom led me to the backyard and pushed open the storage room door. In the corner were more than a dozen neatly stacked cases of the exact same whisky. Some were damp and moldy, others were covered in cobwebs. These were all the New Year’s gifts I had my husband, Kevin Zane, buy over the past three years. “W-What is this?” My voice came out dry. My throat was tight.

But, after the already traumatic day I’d had, I couldn't anticipate what was waiting for me at the packhouse. After I shifted back and dressed again, I headed into the house, seeing something that made me immediately stop dead in my tracks. I said it, but God, it was harder this time. The third box had a collection of novels, and my eyes nearly popped out of their sockets. I couldn't return this, it wasn’t a luxury gift, right? Just books. Books weren’t bribery. Books were safe. A harmless, thoughtful gesture. I was bargaining with myself, and I knew it. But as my fingers traced the cover, the side of me that wanted to keep them won. Six novels. All from my favorite authors. How did he know? The thought sat uncomfortably in my mind as I gathered the empty packaging, along with the designer bag, and carried them straight outside. I dumped them into the hallway, shutting the door more gently this time.

I feel tears prick my eyes at such a priceless gift. “Thank you.” I whisper, but since you can hear a pin drop in the room, I know my suitor can hear me. I clutch the book to my chest. I need to get this home to my father. It’s too precious to even have with me at school the rest of the day. As the bell rings, I finally look around to see others with a questioning look on their face. Everyone wants to know what the gift is so they can understand my response. My eyes meet glaciers and I am locked into his gaze. He doesn’t look surprised or like he’s wondering what I received. He looks….. happy. With my response? I have no idea.
