For the first time that day, I felt something close to relief. That night, when I got home, Daisy was waiting with a small package on the table. She said Gabriel had dropped it off. My heart jumped a little. I asked what it was. She smiled and said, “It’s for me.” Inside was a children’s book about courage. He had written a small note inside the cover. It said, For Daisy. Brave hearts shine brightest when the world gets loud.

There are larger battles than desire. By the time I reached the northern ridge where my aunt lived, I had calmed enough to remember why I needed her. If anyone held the truth about my bloodline, it was her. Her cottage sat under the twisted boughs of a dead oak, the air thick with herbs and smoke. She reached into her bag and pulled it out. River’s second novel. The dedication page bookmarked. She handed it to me like it might bite her. He holds up a red-wrapped package, heavy-looking in his hands. Instantly intrigued, I turn and snatch it from him, already grinning as I rip the paper open. It's a book. I look up at him. “It’s a romantic novel,” Aiden says, his eyes flicking between my face and the gift. “The main character travels the world, meets a new lover in every country. It’s based in Italy.” He takes my feet into his lap gently, his fingers already working soothing circles into my arches.

The couple encouraged each other daily. “We’ll have money next year. Luck will finally be on our side then!” “Honey, once I get rich, I’ll treat you right!” Humans seemed to cling to dreams in hard times, like the little match girl in the snow. She lit her sticks, dreaming of warmth and comfort, only to freeze to death that winter. It was time to shatter their illusions. I had been wondering how to do it elegantly and gently. I pretended not to know anything. It was just to savor that moment of sweet satisfaction.

Dylan's POV I thanked the elderly bookseller before purchasing the novel I had been holding, though I quietly added two more books to the stack after noticing Aliya pause in front of them earlier. She never asked for expensive gifts or expected extravagant surprises, yet I had learned that the quickest way to brighten her entire day was to place a good book in her hands. The shop owner wrapped each one carefully in brown paper before tying them together with a pale blue ribbon, smiling to herself the entire time as though she had already guessed they weren't really for me. "Too cold outside." After buying the gift she was checking out of the shop when the owner gave her the booklet, the same one she wanted to buy, " A gift for your next novel. May you have a miraculous Christmas!" She winked.

He picked it up and started reading it. That paper was a document by Hamburg, the first senator of Bingle land.
